Current park status – Closures from Tropical Storm Michael

Many campsites at Kerr Lake had to be closed for the weekend due to impacts from Tropical Storm Michael and rising water. Kerr Reservoir is rapidly rising and will rise several feet through the weekend. Winds from Michael blew down several trees in the area and there is a lot of debris on roads and campsites. Additionally, there are several areas currently without power. Because of widespread power outages in the entire region, we do not know when power will be restored. Hibernia campground is without power, which also means there is no water for campsites or the bathhouses.  All JC Cooper campground has been closed through 10/17/18. There are numerous trees down, no power, no water and the road into the campground is blocked by downed powerlines. The park office is also without power, phones or internet.

The reservation call center is contacting customers with impacted sites; the facilities currently closed are listed below.  Please note that more facilites may be closed and added to the list over the weekend.

Kerr Lake State Recreation Area

Kerr Lake State Recreation Area is a collective of seven access areas scattered around the shoreline of this 50,000-acre reservoir that reaches into Virginia. Hundreds of campsites among five of the access areas offer a range of outdoor experience from RV hookups to group camps. There are several swim beaches in the recreation area and multiple boating ramps, some offering 24-hour access with a few reserved for campers. Two private marinas serve boaters and the lake is renowned for excellent fishing. An extensive boat ramp facility at the Nutbush Access is suitable for fishing tournaments. A community building is a popular venue for family or community gatherings.
