Temporary Employment
Temporary and seasonal jobs are available at most state parks and recreation areas, with varying durations of employment to include more opportunities during our peak season. A variety of opportunities are available, including park attendants, lifeguards, office assistants, naturalists, maintenance workers, and grounds keepers.
Seasonal Positions Available
Please note: this is a seasonal position that runs from 4-1-25 through 10-1-25.
Description of Work:
Work involves the upkeep and general maintenance of park grounds, canoe in campsites as well as campsites in the park and all facilities. Employee will be operating a riding lawn mower (zero turn), weed eaters, backpack blowers and various power and hand tools. Employee will assist park maintenance mechanics and park rangers with projects. Employee will clean and maintain park facilities including the office, campsites, restrooms, bathhouse, shelters, and park vehicles. Employee will work to complete other tasks and assignments as needed. Weekend work is required. Employee will be visible to park visitors and answer visitor questions and inquiries. Employee will be required to wear Park Staff attire at all times. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid NC drivers license. Employees will also be required to enter time weekly and release it to Office Assistant. Other administrative duties are to complete required computer training.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Some experience with the operation of mowing equipment, tractors and hand/power tools. The ability to life approximately 50 pounds. Applicants will need the ability to follow oral, written, and visual instructions. They must have the ability to work independently without close supervision.

Lumber River State Park is seeking a motivated and reliable Seasonal Office Assistant to support daily operations at the Visitor Center. This role is essential in delivering excellent visitor experiences through high-quality customer service and efficient front desk operations. The ideal candidate is self-directed, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple tasks and interacting with several visitors at once in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
• Provide exceptional customer service to park visitors
• Answer questions and share accurate park information
• Check in campers and provide campground orientation
• Answer phone calls and relay detailed messages to park staff
• Handle cash transactions and operate a register accurately
• Prepare and reconcile end-of-day sales reports
• Maintain cleanliness of the Visitor Center, including breakroom and employee restroom
• Assist staff with general facility cleaning as needed
• Utilize computer systems, including email and Microsoft Office applications
Work Schedule
• Wednesday through Sunday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
• Scheduled days off: Monday and Tuesday
• Weekend availability is required
Minimum Qualifications
• Must be at least 18 years of age
• Strong customer service and communication skills
• Ability to multitask and work independently
• Trustworthy with cash handling and financial transactions
• Basic computer proficiency (email, Microsoft Office)
Additional Information
A park uniform will be provided and must be worn during all scheduled shifts
