Park closures status

All park areas have reopened after the high lake levels after Hurricane Florence.  Several low-lying areas are still partially flooded however, including the parts of the swim beaches and areas close to the shoreline.  Park visitors entering the water should take care as unusual underwater drop-offs may still exist.

Sandling Beach is closed for the winter season as normal.  It will reopen April 1, 2019.

Falls Lake State Recreation Area

Falls Lake State Recreation Area is a collective of seven access areas scattered around the shoreline of this undeveloped, 12,000-acre reservoir. More than 300 campsites at four of the access areas offer a range of outdoor experience from RV hookups to primitive tent camping and group camps. There are five swim beaches in the recreation area and a number of boating ramps, some reserved for paddlers and non-gasoline powered boats. The Beaverdam access offers a network of mountain biking trails as well as a separate and quiet lake impoundment perfect for paddling, fishing and swimming. The Mountains-to-Sea State Trail winds through parts of the recreation area and is a centerpiece of a network of hiking trails.

⇒  ATTENTION: CAMPERS

Apple Maps is providing incorrect directions to Shinleaf campgrounds. Entering the campgrounds address — 13708 New Light Road in Wake Forest — will take you to private property.

We are working on remedying the issue with Apple. In the meantime, please follow these directions to get to the campground:

From Durham, take N.C. 98 E for about 12 miles. Turn left onto New Light Road. After half a mile, the entrance to Shinleaf area will be on your right.

From Wake Forest/U.S. 1, take N.C. 98 W for 9 miles. Turn right onto New Light Road. After half a mile, the entrance to Shinleaf area will be on your right.

From Raleigh, go north on Six Forks Road. After about 16 miles, once you cross N.C. 98/Durham Road, Six Forks Road turns into New Light Road. The entrance to Shinleaf area will be on your right.
