Learn how the North Carolina park service began and how ranger duties have evolved to serve today’s visitors.

Join Ranger Fields and enjoy peaceful canoeing on the park’s lake. We will meet at the lake’s bathhouse, go over canoe safety, get fitted with life jackets and paddles, and hit the water. While this is a free program, attendees must have experience paddling. This program is suitable for older ages and may be influenced by adverse weather conditions. Join us on New Years Day, for our annual First Day Hike! We will be meeting at the Mount Jefferson Picnic Shelter for 1.4 mile hike to the Luther Rock Overlook. Please dress for cold weather and wear proper shoes. Snow/ice will cancel this program.

Join us for the annual First Day Hike at Fort Fisher SRA. We will hike the Basin Trail at 1pm, meet at the flagpole in front of the Visitor's Center. The Basin Trail is an easy hike and will take us to views of Zeke's Island for a total roundtrip of two miles. Please dress for the weather, wear appropriate shoes, and bring water. See you there!

On January 1st 2026 at 930am, you can meet at the park office, (two story cabin building) for a Ranger led 4 mile hike through the mountains mixed hardwood forest.

Accompany Ranger Wood on a short walk up to the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) Cabin where you’ll be able to take a look inside and learn about the 1933 New Deal program.  Then discuss the Fire Tower, located just beyond the cabin, and its connection to our park.  This program is open to all ages, and we hope to see you there!

Whether you're a beginner or an experienced birdwatcher, this walk offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature. Bring your binoculars and camera to capture the beauty of the birds while enjoying the peaceful surroundings.
