2026: America 250

About America 250

In 2026, America will commemorate 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the development of a new nation dedicated to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” In the years since, our country has undergone many changes, and faced many challenges. This commemoration offers us a unique opportunity to reflect upon our country’s founding ideals. How have those ideals impacted our last 250 years? How do they resonate today? When are we US? Explore with us the pivotal events, places, and voices, both historical and modern, that have shaped our state and country from the Halifax Resolves to the civil rights movement, and beyond.

North Carolina State Parks is marking America 250 by highlighting two powerful symbols of our nation’s history and resilience: bald eagles and witness trees. Bald eagles can be found in a number of state parks across North Carolina, serving as a living reminder of the country’s natural heritage and conservation success. At the same time, parks across the state are home to witness trees, living landmarks that were present during significant moments in local, state, or national history. These trees hold deep meaning for the parks and the surrounding communities, connecting today’s visitors to the generations who came before and the stories that helped shape our nation.
