Come learn the basics. Learn about the types of maps and how to read a scale.

Reading a topographic map involves understanding contour lines. We will convert simple topographic maps to a three-dimensional representation. Next, we will practice orienting a map, using a compass, and finding your step and pace distance. Then, participants will learn how to find north and practice taking a bearing relative to magnetic north. If time permits, participants can put their skills into practice orienteering a small course.
