Mount Mitchell State Park reopened Sept. 15, 2025, for the first time since Hurricane Helene. The reopening coincides with the Blue Ridge Parkway reopening between milepost 382 in Asheville and milepost 355.3, near the entrance to the state park. With this announcement, all North Carolina state parks are now at least partially open.
Trails
Most trails within Mount Mitchell State Park are open. One section of the Old Mitchell Trail, between the park office and its intersection with Camp Alice Trail, remains closed. Several connecting trails in Pisgah National Forest are also still closed. Visitors should check the U.S. Forest Service website for the most up-to-date information on Pisgah trails and facilities.
Parkway Access
The Blue Ridge Parkway is open up to the state park entrance but remains closed from just past Mount Mitchell through milepost 334 near Little Switzerland. Visitors approaching from the east and north will need to enter the Parkway near Asheville. Travelers should plan ahead and ensure they have enough fuel for a 70-mile round trip before entering the Parkway, as there are no gas stations near the park.
Facilities
Closed until further notice: tent campsites, restaurant
Open with limited availability: concession stand (Saturdays and Sundays)
Opening soon (pending staffing): gift shop
Visitor Guidance
Repairs are still ongoing within the park, and visitors should use caution on roads and trails. Travelers should also be mindful that some facilities in neighboring public lands remain closed.
Upcoming Event
A reopening celebration is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 18. Additional details will be shared in the coming days.
