Paintings created during a Paint Plein Air at the Pond program at Merchants Millpond State Park

Join us at Merchants Millpond State Park for "en plen air" painting, i.e. painting while sitting outside in nature! Derived from the French word for "outdoors," this practice was especially common among the French impressionist painters, who wanted to capture the changing appearance of natural light in their work. Are you ready to be the next Monet, Pissarro or Renoir?

Participants should bring their chosen art mediums: markers and crayons, acrylics, oils, watercolor, pencils and graphites, charcoal, pastel, inks and pens, or any other favorite medium you want to try en plein air. The park will also have limited supplies available for use.

Bring a table or easel and a chair, as well as sunblock and bug spray! If you will be using paints or watercolors, bring a sealed container for paint water. We will be painting for 2 hours, so bring a drink and a snack, and bring a trash bag for your trash.

All ages and skill levels are welcome! Registration begins at 9 a.m. and we will begin setting up at 9:30 a.m. The group will reconvene at 12 p.m. to view everyone's art, provide encouragement and hear some insight.
