Haw River State Park offers a variety of learning opportunities for all ages. Typically led by park rangers, these interpretive programs allow the public to gain perspective into what makes North Carolina state parks naturally wonderful.

Most of the events are free, though some require pre-registration. All give park visitors deeper insight into the natural world. Call the park office for more information.

Join a park ranger for a leisurely hike along the 3.2-mile Great Blue Heron Loop Trail.  The hike is easy to moderate and will take a couple of hours to complete.  You are more than welcome to walk with the ranger and learn about the history of the park or strike out on own depending on your walking speed.  This hike is a part of the Blue Cross/Blue Shield Hike NC initiative.

Date of Event:
Sat, 03/24/2018 - 1:00pm to 3:00pm
Start Location:
Parking lot at Iron Ore Belt Access.

From our vast coastline to our high mountain peaks, North Carolina is home to a diversity of habitats that support hundreds of species and other wildlife.  Haw River State Park is one of many parks that are part of the North Carolina Birding Trail which is a partnership between six organizations: NC Wildlife Resources Commission, Audubon NC, NC Sea Grant, US Fish and Wildlife, NC State University Cooperative Extension, and NC State Parks.

During the springtime, the wetlands of the Haw River come to life with all the waterfowl that’s either migrating, or settling in for the breeding season.  We’ll experience this when we walk the Great Blue Heron Trail Loop at dusk.  The quiet of the sunset is beautifully broken by the calls of wood duck, mallard and other water fowl as they come in to roost in the wetland.  We’ll spend as much time as the group wishes while listening as the birds settle in for the evening.

Enjoy the arrival of spring at Haw River State Park’s Iron Ore Belt Access during our annual SpringFest.  This free family event takes place in the Green Field next to the parking lot and includes two Easter egg hunts for ages 1 to 12 years old (don't forget your baskets), nature crafts, face painting, and tree climbing.  The first egg hunt will take place at 1:15 p.m. and the second one will be at 2:15 p.m.

Upon arrival, you will be directed to the park information booth where children will be given a colored band.  This will indicate their time slot for the egg hunt.  But don’t worry, there will be plenty of activities for your little ones to be involved with while waiting their turn.

Our tree climbing event was such a huge success, we’ll be hosting this earlier than the rest of the festival.  Please call the park office by April 5th to ensure your time in the trees.
