Join us at Merchants Millpond State Park for another summer full of adventures!
On Monday, June 16th, Ranger Jeff will introduce us to the fantastic world of fire! Most people think fire is a bad thing, but it is also a part of nature just like everything else. While fires can cause harm, they can also be beneficial if utilized properly. Fires allow for new growth and new food sources for animals. Some plants are even adapted to survive fires! Come learn some of the ways park staff use fires to help the millpond.
This program will start at 10:00 AM sharp at the visitor center auditorium and last for about an hour. We will meet for a brief lecture before heading outside to check out some of the tools that park staff utilize when fire is involved. There is a possibility of sweet treats afterward. We will be going outside for this program, so guests are encouraged to dress for the weather.
When the weather heats up, so does the Millpond, so now is a great time to see the areas of Merchants Millpond where the staff has previously conducted prescribed burns. We encourage guests to hike the trails for themselves and observe these areas and how they change over time. We also have a small scavenger hunt set up for those who are interested, so grab a list and go see what you can find!
