Merchants Millpond State Park, located in Gates County just 10 miles south of North Carolina’s northeastern border with Virginia, is a peaceful escape into a wetland world shaped by a 190-year-old, 760-acre millpond. Paddle through calm, shallow waters or hike the scenic trails to experience the beauty of old-growth cypress trees draped in Spanish moss, especially in the magical Lassiter Swamp. This “enchanted forest” is teeming with wildlife, and lucky visitors may even spot an American alligator—the northernmost point of its range. Whether you’re exploring by land or water, there’s always something fascinating to discover. What will you find at Merchants Millpond?
The NC Science Trail has partnered with the NC State Parks to bring you a variety of new scavenger hunts this spring. Explore the wildlife, plants, trees, and outdoor recreation at selected state parks across the state. All you have to do is download the Goosechase app, enter the 6-digit “Join Code” (UTXWVJ) and start your adventure at the Merchants Millpond State Park Visitor Center. Take a hike along Lassiter Trail to try to find all the items and get a chance to win some prizes! Make sure to plan your hike in advance, dress for the weather, and pack snacks and water.
You can access Lassiter Trail from the visitor center, as well as the bike trail parking area (231 US Hwy 158E, Gatesville, NC 27938)
Adventures are currently “live” and can be completed at any time. Complete one or more missions and stop by the Visitor Center on the way out to claim your bragging rights. Email Michele at michele@ncsciencetrail.org and she will send you your prize!
