The Operations section has wide range of varied responsibilities from education to the protection of park visitors. Each section's major responsibilities presented in priority order together with the duties associated with each responsibility are shown below.

Interpretation and Education   

  • Identify park resources and interpretative themes
  • Determine program type needed (develop/present programs in park)
  • Develop interpretation and education facilities (equipment, displays, materials)
  • Special events and or outreach programs
  • EELE's (environmental education learning experiences, plus inter-agency shared resources)

Natural and Cultural Resource Management    

  • Survey and inventory park resources
  • Monitor exotic species, historic site conditions, external threats
  • Emergency response (training, natural disasters, chemical spills, etc.)
  • Develop and implement resource management plan (fire management, old field, habitat, boundary, protection, species management, historic site rehabilitation, land acquisition, and evaluation procedures for management plan)

Visitor Protection and Safety    

  • Law enforcement
  • Search and rescue
  • Emergency medical service
  • Disaster preparedness
  • Fire fighting
  • Safety: employee and visitor


  • Facility and grounds maintenance and inspections (simple, cyclic, capital)
  • Equipment (routine, non-routine)
  • Administration of maintenance program (purchasing, job tickets, etc., maintenance plan)

  • Operations planning
  • Public/interagency relations
  • Budget management
  • Personnel/performance management
  • Special projects
  • Operations for public use
