Backpack Tips

According to an REI article, packing can be broken down into three zones, plus peripheral storage:

Visualize stacking cordwood. You’re laying down rows, not building columns: Fill nooks and crannies until you have a solid, stable load—and be sure weight is equally balanced on each side. Tighten compression straps to streamline your load and prevent it from shifting as you hike.

Guided Hikes

Meet at the Visitor Center and take a leisurely hike to identify birds native to the area.

With living in or visiting the Grandfather Mountain State Park area one thing is obvious...there are a lot of great hiking trails in the area to explore. If you are new to hiking or have never hiked before this is the program you’ll want to attend.

Come walk with a ranger along the Beech Tree Trail to see all things blooming.  Learn the names of the flowers and something about their nature.  Meet at the trailhead parking lot.

Haw River State Park will be hosting a National Park Trust Kids to Parks Day (KTP Day).  This program is part of the national day of outdoor play designed to connect kids and families with their local, state, and national parks.

Meet a ranger at the Lower Trail Head Parking Area for a 1.5 mile moderate hike to look at the different trees that live in Stone Mountain State Park.

Join a Park Ranger at the Jacob Fork Parking Area at 11:00 am for a streamside hike along the Jacob Fork River.

Come join a park ranger for a leisurely night hike down to the wetlands and around the park as we discover the sounds of the night.  Water bottles, flashlights and bug spray are all recommended.

Help us celebrate National Trails Day by joining park staff for a guided 5 Waterfall Challenge Hike!  Please wear appropriate hiking footwear, bring water, sunscreen and snacks as desired.  We will coordinate carpooling to the Lower Cascades and Tory's Falls, outer areas at the beginning of our hike.

On June 2, 2018 Haw River State Park celebrates National Trails Day.  Share an adventure as we make new friends along the 3.2 mile-long Great Blue Heron Loop trail.  The hike is easy to moderate and takes approximately two hours to complete.  In case of bad weather, please call the park office at 336-342-6163 to confirm program has not been rescheduled.
