Backpack Tips

According to an REI article, packing can be broken down into three zones, plus peripheral storage:

Visualize stacking cordwood. You’re laying down rows, not building columns: Fill nooks and crannies until you have a solid, stable load—and be sure weight is equally balanced on each side. Tighten compression straps to streamline your load and prevent it from shifting as you hike.

Guided Hikes

Join a Park Ranger for a wildflower walk along the Jacob Fork River.  These moderate hikes will begin at the Jacob Fork Parking Area and last approximately one hour.  Each hike will be about 0.75 miles long.  Current blooming wildflowers and other flora will be identified on this walk.

Have you ever wanted to learn how to fish?  Come join the park rangers and learn new skills or brush up on your current fishing skills.  Topics include casting, baiting, water safety as well as basic fishing rules and regulations.  All ages are welcome, but minors need a parent to accompany them during the program.

A guided hike to the ridge while talking all things Jockey's Ridge.  The hike will be approximately one mile in distance.  Come prepared to be outdoors in areas with full sun.

Meet the park ranger for a spring hike. We will follow the path along the ridge toward the outcrop know as Luther Rock. Our hike will be located 4000 feet above sea-level. We hope to see a few spring leaves and perhaps the White Blood Root flower blooming along the trail side. bring a jacket and a camera. 922

Come join a park ranger for a Mother's Day hike at the edge of the world! This is a little-known vista affords views of Hickory Nut Gorge and the piedmont of North Carolina all the way to South Carolina on a clear day. Participants will learn about the history of the area, its flora and fauna, and get a little exercise in!
