Backpack Tips

According to an REI article, packing can be broken down into three zones, plus peripheral storage:

Visualize stacking cordwood. You’re laying down rows, not building columns: Fill nooks and crannies until you have a solid, stable load—and be sure weight is equally balanced on each side. Tighten compression straps to streamline your load and prevent it from shifting as you hike.

Guided Hikes

Enjoy a leisurely walk along the Hemlock Nature Trail, and learn about some of the many plant species that stay green all year long.  Meet at the Jacob Fork Parking Area at 11:00 am for this easy one mile walk.

Start the New Year on the right foot! Come and meet with a Park Ranger on the first day of the new year. During the easy .8 hike on Jomeokee Trail, we will be discussing the park's history, geology and local flora and fauna.

Bring in the new year hiking the trails at Lake Phelps.  Take in some of the scenic views around the lake and discover why Pettigrew State Park is a popular destination for winter waterfowl viewing. Binoculars are recommended but not required. Meet at the park office at 1:00 p.m. to start this program.  Call the park office for more information at 252-797-4475.

Start the New Year on the right foot! Come and meet with a Park Ranger on the first day of the new year. Get some exercise in by hiking the strenuous Ledge Springs Trail. Led by a park ranger, we will hike this trail, discussing park history, local wildlife, geology, and interpreting anything else along the way!
