Family oriented programs all day! Telescopes!  Nature Hikes!  Eclipse Arts and Crafts!  10 am - 6 pm 

  • 10am – Big Sun, Small Moon- Auditorium
    • Explore the reasons behind why the moon blocks out the sun during a solar eclipse
  • 11am – Waterfall / Nature Hike Upper Bear -VC Front Doors
  • 12 pm – Astronomy -Auditorium
  • 1pm – Solar Pizza- Amphitheater
    • Come and make a solar eclipse happen in the palm of your hands!
  • 2pm – Moon Phases and Eclipses– Auditorium
    • Investigate how Earth’s motions create the day and year, what causes moon phases. And what causes solar and lunar eclipses  
  • 3pm - Astronomy – Auditorium
  • 4pm – Eclipse Arts & Crafts – Classroom
  • 5pm – Waterfall / Nature Hike – VC Front Doors
  • 6pm – Astronomy – Auditorium

Meet with the Naturalist to learn more about our nearest space object, the Moon! We will be able to see our Moon during the day time and learn about how the moon formed and why it is very important to Earth. On Monday August 21st, the moon will eclipse the sun and Mount Mitchell will be 98.43% in the eclipse path. This rare event will not happen here again till May 2078!

This FREE Family Fun Festival will run on Sunday, August 20 from 10am to 5pm.  Live Music, Food Vendors, Exhibitors, Special Programs and MORE!  Plan to bring the WHOLE Family and Spend A Day the Park!

  • 12 noon – Solar Eclipse Geometry (Auditorium): The position of the sun, earth and moon; and the distances that determine what we see
  • 1:30pm – Falconer Peter Kipp
  • 2pm – 4pm – Music by: Tina Eno
