Do not depend on GPS to locate the park office. The following directions will get you to the main access of the park. From HWY 64 take exit 558 and follow the signs for approximately 8 miles to the park office. You are not required to travel dirt roads to reach the park office.

Pettigrew State Park's bathhouse has been winterized and is closed for the winter (12/1- 3/15). Restrooms are available behind the park office.

Events and Programs

Pettigrew State Park offers a variety of learning opportunities for all ages. Typically led by park rangers, these interpretive programs allow the public to gain perspective into what makes North Carolina state parks naturally wonderful. ​

Most of the events are free, though some require pre-registration. All give park visitors deeper insight into the natural world. Call the park office for more information.


Spend the morning with a Ranger canoeing Lake Phelps. Bring sunscreen, clothes that can get wet, and a hat.  Meet at the park office.  
**Program is weather dependent. PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED! Spaces are limited. Call the park office at (252)797-4475 to register for this FREE program.

Join a Park Ranger for a fascinating look at one of nature's most successful winged predators. We will take a short hike to try and catch a glimpse of these silent predators. Be prepared for a 1 mile hike. Call the park office at (252)797-4475 for more information.

Come out and view one of the most spectacular meteor showers of the year.  Meet in the office parking lot.  Bring a chair or blanket and bugspray.  May be cancelled in case of inclement weather.

In celebration of National Grandparents Day and State Parks' 2018 theme of Fishing Fun, we invite the senior anglers to bring out their grandkids and try fishing Lake Phelps.
Have you ever wanted to try fishing but don’t want to invest in all the equipment? You can borrow ours! Meet a ranger at the park office to learn the basics of fishing and try your hand at fishing our beautiful waters.  Rods, reels and bait will be provided. Wear close toed shoes, a hat, and bring water.  All ages welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult. North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission fishing regulations still apply.

It's Take a Child Outside Week! Bring your kids out to Pettigrew State Park for StoryWalk. StoryWalk is simply a book and a walking path combined. Our story of the week is "Be a Friend to Trees". Stop by the park office, tell park staff about the book and get a prize!
