Take a "FIRST" Hike

Start the New Year with some fresh air! Join one of the many "first hikes" in a beautiful North Carolina State Park. Join a park ranger for an informal hike down the Hickory Trail. We will begin at the Park's Visitor Center and return there for a 1.5 mile hike to the river and back. Wear Sturdy shoes and bring water.

Join a Park Ranger in learning how to recognize and identify our favorite Summer and Fall wildflowers during Winter. Also, learn about the ecological benefits a fallow field adds to a wildlife habitat. 

Free Native grass seed samples to participants as long as supplies last.

Borrow a rod from the park or bring your own. After learning basics: practice, practice practice and you may land a smallie or red eye bass.  Good luck and have some Fun at the Park.

36th Annual Canoe Race!

The 36th Annual New River Canoe Race was a blast!  Great weather coupled with above normal water levels created ideal conditions for a fun day of racing on New River.  The race is coordinated by Friends of High Country State Parks and is a long running tradition of bringing families to paddle the river.  The race includes multiple categories for men, women, mixed, and families utilizing different water craft such as canoes, kayaks and longboats.  There were about 150 boat entries in the race from novice to champion levels.
