Road Closure

The park road will be closed to vehicular traffic on August 24, 25 and 26 due to the NC Downhill Stateboard Race.
The road closuer will be from park opening time to 5pm each day.
A shuttle service will be provided for spectators on August 25 and 26 to the race viewing areas.
Please park in the old Lowe's parking lot at the base of the mountain to catch the shuttle, shuttle will begin at 9am.

Sunset Yoga Program

Bring your favorite Yoga Mat and meet the yoga guide for this free hour of exercise, fresh air, and amazing views from Mt. Jefferson. All ages are welcome for this weather dependent activity.

Long Hazy Days of Summer


Is the heat getting to you? Come on up! Ashe County, home of Mount Jefferson State Natural Area, is often referred to "as the Coolest Corner of North Carolina."

Join a Park Ranger guided hike or program. Take a float down the New River and find the perfect fishing hole.

July is packed with local activities. There are continuing concerts in the Town of Todd and on the Backstreet of West Jefferson. The month ends with the Bluegrass and Old Time Fiddlers Convention on July 27 and 28.

Spring has come to the mountains!

The sky is Carolina Blue with a few white, fluffy clouds. The snow is melting and the temperatures are getting just right for a visit to Mount Jefferson State Natural Area.
The trees are beginning to bud, the grass is turning green and soon there will be newborn animals everywhere!

Spring Nature Hike

Meet the park ranger for a spring hike. We will follow the path along the ridge toward the outcrop know as Luther Rock. Our hike will be located 4000 feet above sea-level. We hope to see a few spring leaves and perhaps the White Blood Root flower blooming along the trail side. bring a jacket and a camera. 922  

Climate Tower Program & Hike

Meet the park ranger at the Mt. Jefferson picnic area for a hike up to the NC Climate Tower. The tower is located on the mountain summit 4683 feet above sea-level. During our hike we will discuss how climate differs from weather, and will explore some of the ways that the Appalachian Mountains are interconnected with climate.
