Hammocks Beach State Park

Bear Island Current Information

Bear Island Ferry Service and Bathhouse Open Daily through Labor Day.
Through Labor Day weekend, ferry service to Bear Island operates hourly Monday and Tuesday and every 1/2 hour Wednesday through Sunday, beginning at 9:30 am with the last ferry off Bear Island at 6:00 pm.  Please see the ferry schedule link for the complete schedule. Ferry tickets are sold first come, first served and may sell out early in the day.  Arrive early in the day to purchase tickets.

Chris Campbell Community Service Day

This annual special event was created in memory of the late U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Campbell, a former lifeguard and enthusiast of the park.  Park staff is inviting the community to come out to the park and honor the life of Chris by volunteering their time at a place he loved.

Monarch Keepers

Join us at the park to learn about various conservation efforts for the monarch butterfly that you can do at your own home.  We will talk about their natural history and its status, and then make a flower craft to start your own butterfly garden at your house .  Space is limited; contact the park office to register: 910-326-4881.

Have you ever gone for a walk on the beach and wondered what the names of all those shells are?  Join a ranger to learn about the many different shells that can be found on the beaches of North Carolina including Hammocks Beach State Park.  Every day new shells are deposited on beach awaiting to be discovered!

Stop the Bleed talk

In partnership with Onslow County Emergency Medical Services and Naval Medicine Lejeune Hammocks Beach is proud to offer a course on how to “Stop the Bleed”.  This hour long class is specifically geared toward the immediate responder in dealing with a traumatic bleeding incident which, if left untreated, may result in death.

Lifeguards Not on Duty Daily

Lifeguards may not be on duty daily through Labor Day, Monday, September 3, 2018 in the protected swim area.  Park staff make every effort to ensure lifeguards are on duty in the protected swim area Memorial Day through Labor Day; however, due to circumstances beyond our control and occasionally at the last moment, lifeguards may not be on duty.  If you have questions about the status of lifeguards, please contact the park office at hammocks.beach@ncparks.gov or 910.326.4881.  Always use extreme caution as rip currents and strong currents can
