According to an REI article, packing can be broken down into three zones, plus peripheral storage:
Visualize stacking cordwood. You’re laying down rows, not building columns: Fill nooks and crannies until you have a solid, stable load—and be sure weight is equally balanced on each side. Tighten compression straps to streamline your load and prevent it from shifting as you hike.
Join a Park Ranger for a short, informative hike from the Visitor Center to the Lake Bath House. We'll discuss the history of the Civilian Conservation Corps in the park and see first-hand impacts of their important work. Pictures and artifacts will be on-hand as well. Approximate length of program is 45 minutes. In case of inclement weather, program will be held in the Visitor Center Audit
Meet in the Visitor Center lobby for a leisurely hike exploring the natural side of Fort Macon. Hike will cover both trail and beach.
Join a park ranger to explore the lower Profile Trail in the twilight hours. Along the way, see and hear nocturnal wildlife and enjoy the woods in that special time of the day. We’ll walk approximately one mile, round trip. Bring a flashlight and dress for the weather. Close toed shoes are highly recommended.
Meet a ranger for a one mile out-and-back hike to the 200 foot Stone Mountain Falls. Geology of the area will be discussed on the way.
This strenuous 2-mile round trip hike up an old logging road will take the Friends to the top of Rumbling Bald Mountain to Party Rock, the source of the Party Rock Fire. From here you can see excellent views of Lake Lure, Chimney Rock, and Hickory Nut Gorge.
Come out for a Ranger-led nature hike. We will be exploring our fire-dependent longleaf pine ecosystem. We will observe numerous native species to the Sandhills and visit some 200-year old longleaf pine trees with Red Cockaded Woodpecker cavities. Bring a bottle of water, a camera (if you like taking pictures), and your walking shoes!
Take a shaded walk along the beautiful Boardwalk with the park ranger. Look for birds and other wildlife and discover some of what the Swamp has to offer.
During this Ranger guided hike we will learn to identify birds using various field guides and phone apps. Don’t forget to bring your binoculars!
Sister Trek is aimed at introducing women to the fun and benefits of hiking. Please dress in layers for the weather and wear hiking boots or sturdy athletic shoes. If you bring your dog, make sure that he is on a leash and socialized and Join a Ranger as she leads a 2 mile nature hike through the long leaf pine ecosystem. Experience the unique beauty of the Sandhills.
