Hammocks Beach State Park offers a variety of learning opportunities for all ages. Typically led by park rangers, these interpretive programs allow the public to gain perspective into what makes North Carolina state parks naturally wonderful. ​

Most of the events are free, though some require pre-registration. All give park visitors deeper insight into the natural world. Call the park office for more information.

 

Discover the natural and cultural history of sea turtles that inhabit our waters in and around North Carolina during the summer months.  You will get a chance to hear about their nesting activities, any natural and human threats, & all the management practices being implemented to protect these gentle sea dwellers.

TOPIC: BACKPACKS

Whether you’re hiking or just packing for camping it’s important to be prepared.  Join us as we examine and discuss multiple types, sizes and styles of backpacks.  We will then  take a look at what a person should always carry with them for the “just in case scenario” all the way to a day hike.

Enjoy this ranger-guided trip through the adjacent marsh water as we explore some of the ecosystems which make this part of North Carolina so special.  Kayaks, paddles, and lifejackets will be provided.  Must be 13 years and older to participate.

Learn about these wave skimmers that frequent the waters around Hammocks Beach State Park giving us a playful show almost daily.  We will talk about their natural history including any conservation efforts there are.  There is so much we can learn from them!

NOTE: Program is at Bear Island Concession Stand. (Ferry ticket purchase is required to attend this program).

Here is your chance to be an official North Carolina State Parks Junior Ranger!  During this week-long program children will get a chance to explore the outdoor world through various adventures including: reptiles, fish, habitats, birds, and other curious nature wonders to be explored.  Each day we will explore a different topic.  Children will be working towards earning their North Carolina Junior Ranger certificate and patch.  The program is free for children ages 6-12.
