Events and Programs

Pilot Mountain State Park offers a variety of learning opportunities for all ages. Typically led by park rangers, these interpretive programs allow the public to gain perspective into what makes North Carolina state parks naturally wonderful. ​

Most of the events are free, though some require pre-registration. All give park visitors deeper insight into the natural world. Call the park office for more information.

 

Look for bats, listen for owls, and enjoy the night as we walk in the dark. Meet with a park ranger at the Summit Parking Area to join for a hike of the Jomeokee Trail at night. Please bring a personal flashlight.

Meet with a park ranger at the Jomeokee Trailhead. During the hike we will be discussing the park's history, geology and local flora and fauna

An initiative to collect stories and memories from past land owners, visitors, and staff to share the importance of conservation at Pilot Mountain as a park, preserve it's connection to the local community, and invoke stewardship for future generations. Join a park ranger at the library in Pilot Mountain to share your story and memories from visiting the mountain through audio recording. Recording times available from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Email Jesse.Anderson@ncparks.gov if you have questions regarding the program.

Celebrate Grandparents Day the Park Ranger way! Grandparents – Bring your grand-kids and celebrate Grandparents Day by fishing with us!!  Park Rangers at Pilot Mountain State Park will have a limited supply of rental fishing rods, or you can bring your own!  Learn to fish!  The largest and smallest fish will receive a prize! Meet at the Pilot Creek Section of the park off Boyd Nelson Rd.  Driving Directions from US Hwy 52: Take exit 134, drive west on Hwy 268 and turn left onto Shoals Road (1st left after gas station), after 0.5 miles, turn left onto Boyd Nelson Road.  Once you cross the first bridge on Boyd Nelson Road turn right into the first field and park there.

The Mountain Section:

March 15 to November 30 : Opens at 7am. Closes at Sunset. 

December to February : Opens at 8am. Closes at 6pm. 

Campers only may enter the mountain section until the following times:
March,April, October- 9pm
May-September- 10pm
November- 8pm

Yadkin River Section:
November to February: 8:30am - 5pm
March, April: 8:30am - 7pm
May, June, July, August, September: 8:30am - 8pm
October: 8:30am - 7pm

Please note the North and South River Sections are 10 and 20 miles from the mountain section of the park and have different operating hours. Gates are locked promptly at closing. There is no gate entry before or after hours, including campgrounds, except in case of medical or law enforcement emergency. No vehicles other than those registered to campers may be left in the park overnight.
