State Park Visitor Victim of Drowning Accident

RALEIGH -- A medical examiner has ruled that a Virginia man found dead at Merchants Millpond State Park Sunday was the victim of a drowning accident, according to the N.C. Division of Parks and Recreation.

Peter Paul Constanzer, 50, of New Kent, VA, was one of a group of six people camping at the park's canoe-in campground Friday night. He became separated from the group about 5:30 p.m. while canoeing.

Constanzer's canoe was found by friends at 9:45 a.m. Saturday and park rangers found his body in the water about 12:45 p.m. Dr. M.G.F. Gilliland, the chief medical examiner for Pitt County, determined that there was no evidence of foul play in the death.
