Weddings at Mount Mitchell State Park are unique. Please note the following guidelines:

  • Weddings may be held only Mondays to Thursdays (excluding holidays) from May 1 to September 30.
  • Picnic shelters are the only location where weddings, regardless of size, are permitted. No ceremonies or photographs are permitted at the summit. The maximum number of people may not exceed 16, including the couple, photographer, and officiant.

Rent a picnic shelter from our reservations website ». Picnic shelter 1 has better views, while picnic shelter 2, also lovely, is closer to the parking lot.

  • In addition to renting the shelter, a Special Activity Permit » is required for all weddings. Please email the completed application to the park at When filling out the application, please be specific as possible as to the date, time, and the number of people, in order to avoid scheduling conflicts. Please do not send money for the permit fee until it has been approved. You will be notified of the permit cost when your application is approved, as fees are subject to change.

Permit requests are accepted from 1 year up to 1 month prior to the event.

  • From May through August, park gate hours are 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. In September, park gate hours are from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • All park rules and regulations apply to the Special Activity Permit. No plant material, including flowers, may be brought into the park. No music may be played. Alcoholic beverages are strictly prohibited.
  • For weddings in 2021, please note:
    • There is a major construction project at the summit scheduled for this year.
    • Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the park may be ordered to close or limit gathering sizes.
    • We are experiencing a record number of park visitors, and if the park reaches capacity, the gates close.
