Fall Leaf Colors 2021   

Peak leaf season for Mt. Mitchell State Park will begin the first week of October.

Forest composition within the state park consists mostly of evergreen trees. Fall foliage colors within the park will be less spectacular than lower elevations with forest compostition consisting mostly of hardwoods. Please take this into consideration when planning any trips.

TRAIL CONDITIONS & PARK STATUS    

Use extra caution on all trails!
Hiking trails eroded due to storm damage.

Concession Stand is operating Friday - Sunday from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm. 

Given the continued threat of COVID-19 and variants of the virus, face masks are REQUIRED for indoor areas of Mount Mitchell State Park.
 
The following facilities are CLOSED for the year: 
     Restaurant
     Restrooms at the Summit (Port-a-lets only)   
 
Overnight parking is permitted for people backcountry camping in the surrounding National Forest. Please fill out a parking pass and leave it on the dashboard of your car. Passes are located in the boxes where the overnight parking signs are at the summit parking lot. There is no overnight parking permitted at the park office.
 
Please check the weather forecast and prepare accordingly.

Mount Mitchell State Park offers a variety of learning opportunities for all ages. Typically led by park rangers, these interpretive programs allow the public to gain perspective into what makes North Carolina state parks naturally wonderful. ​

Most of the events are free, though some require pre-registration. All give park visitors deeper insight into the natural world. Call the park office for more information.

 

Join park staff at the classroom near the summit tower to learn about an owls diet and digestive system and how an owl pellet is created. Come along and dissect a pellet for youreself!

Join park staff at the classroom near the summit tower to discuss key gear items that we recommend any hiker on Mount Mitchell to bring with them for day/multiday trips.

This program will discuss the different types of animals on Mount Mitchell and the unique qualities that these animals have such as their fur and their skulls. We can tell a lot from looking at an animals skull such as the type of diet this animal eats based off its teeth and the traits that this animal utilizes most for hunting or escaping from predators.
