Centennial Celebration

North Carolina State Parks is hosting a signature Centennial Celebration Saturday, August 27 and Sunday, August 28 at Mount Mitchell State Park.

Saturday will be a day-long celebration of music, mountain crafts, storytelling, history and fellowship will be staged at the summit of Mount Mitchell, where the state parks system began 100 years ago.

Sunday will feature more environmental and recreational activities with an educational focus. It’s part of a year-long celebration with special events in every state park.

The public is enthusiastically invited to this historic event. However, Mount Mitchell State Park will have limited access for private vehicles during the Saturday event. The park is offering special access to carpooling vehicles, such as expanded passenger vans and activities buses (14-passenger). You must register your vanpool.

During Saturday's events, NC 128 from the Blue Ridge Parkway to the mountain summit within Mount Mitchell State Park will have limited access to private vehicles. Visitors may use the free shuttle service from Asheville, Burnsville, Marion or Black Mountain or pre-register for vanpool spot. Here are details about each shuttle service. Commute times are one hour or less.

Traditional mountain music and modern bluegrass will be featured during the day, along with dancing, folk artists and sounds of the mountain dulcimer. Performers will include the Mountain Laurel Band, Nitrograss, Pete and Kim McWhirter, Don Pedi and the Bailey Mountain Cloggers. 

What You’ll See

  • Demonstrations of traditional mountain skills such as blacksmithing, woodworking, quilting, chair caning, basketry, spinning and more.
  • Traditional crafts for sale, including handmade wooden items, pottery, minerals, brooms, jellies, ceramics and baskets. Food trucks will also be on hand.
  • Displays from our partners such as the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, the Swannanoa Valley Museum, the Mountain Gateway Museum, Kids in Parks and Friends of State Parks.
  • There will also be storytelling, games for children and adults, cultural history and natural history interpretive programs, souvenirs and keepsakes.
