It's Winter - Can we still hike?

There are times during the winter months when you may encounter the “Road Closed” sign as you enter Mount Jefferson State Natural Area. Or you may read a weather alert on the website. The question becomes - Can you still take that hike you’ve been promising yourself?

The answer is, yes!

Due to the new Mountain Ridge Trail, you can hike from the park office to the trail system at the Summit
The Mountain Ridge Trail is entered across the road from the park office and is a strenuous 2-mile hike that ascends through each overlook to the upper parking lot. The trail offers hikers beautiful views, diverse plant communities and native stone step craftmanship. From the upper parking lot/picnic area you can enter the summit trail system and add another 2-miles to your hike.

Winter hiking is totally different than Spring, Summer or Fall hiking
During winter, the temperature at the Mount Jefferson summit can be 10-15 degrees colder than the temperature at the park office. Wear appropriate clothing, shoes, bring a hiking stick, lots of water and snacks. Also, make sure you have notified someone (family, friend, park staff) which trails you plan to hike and an estimation of the time it will take to complete you’re hike. Come and enjoy a day of winter hiking at Mount Jefferson State Natural Area!
