About the North Carolina Trails System
The North Carolina Trails System Act, passed in 1973, envisioned a state system of scenic and recreational trails, coordinated with local trails, to promote access between the state’s urban areas and natural areas. Early maps depicted potential interconnections for hiking, biking, paddling and horseback riding.
Today, trails of all types are more popular than ever. State and federal agencies, city and county governments, businesses, non-profits and volunteers are all working together to make the vision a reality.
