Prescribed Burn Scheduled

Thursday, March 1, 2018 - 9:12am
NC Divison of Parks and Recreation Staff Conducting a Prescribed Burn

The park is scheduled to conduct a prescribed burn near the summit of Medoc Mountain during March or April, when the weather conditions are optimum for effectiveness and safety. The goal of this prescribed burn is to reduce leaf litter within the 240-acre tract of land inside the Summit Loop Trail. Reducing leaf litter will remove excess fuel available to burn if a wildfire should be sparked, thus reducing the risk for severe damage to natural resources and facilities. Introducing prescribed fire also improves the ecosystem by adding valuable nutrients back into the soil and eradicating invasive species. Park staff are trained in wildland firefighting skills and wildfire behavior through the National Wildfire Coordinating Group. The Division of Parks and Recreation is working in partnership with the North Carolina Forest Service to conduct the prescribed burn. For the latest prescribed burning information, you can check for alerts posted on the Medoc Mountain State Park website or contact the park office at 252-586-6588.
