Mountain Bike Trails Information

On Saturday, May 20, a small group gathered for a ceremonial ribbon cutting to open the newly constructed mountain bike trails to the public. Park Superintendent Joel Jakubowski was on hand to welcome the riders who showed up to be the first in line to ride the trails.  Friends of Medoc President Denise Evans was given the honor of cutting the ribbon and declaring the trails open for use.
Visitors who want to ride the mountain bike trails should park at the visitor center and can access the trails by using the Bear Swamp Trail. The Saponi Loop bike trail spurs off from the Bear Swamp Trail and is 3.3 miles in length. Riders will get a moderate workout as part of the trail meanders through existing hiking trails. The Pyrite Loop Trail can be accessed from the Saponi Loop Trail and is 5.3 miles in length.  The trail will offer riders a more difficult activity with several pinch points, stream crossings, and a banked turn.
To maximize a rider’s adventure on the trails they should ride counter clockwise during odd years and clockwise during even years. So, in 2017 riders should veer right at the Saponi Loop and Pyrite Loop trailheads and in 2018 they will veer left.  All bike trails are marked with hexagon blazes.
Hikers are welcome to walk the trails.  However, for safety reasons, we ask that they hike the Saponi Loop and Pyrite Loop in the opposite direction that bikes ride. Please allow at least 4.5 hours to hike both loops.
The bike trails are open every day except for Christmas and visitors are expected to be off the trails and out of the park by closing time. For visitor safety and trail sustainability the trails will close to bikers during wet conditions.  Please check the website for the latest trail closings.  Updated trail maps will be available online soon but for more information about the bike trails and to get a copy of the trail maps please stop by the visitor center.
We hope to see you enjoying your day at the park soon!
