Haw River State Park Virtual BioBlitz

Calling All Citizen Scientists! There are 1,160 species currently cataloged at Haw River State Park. Are they all still here? Do we have even MORE? We need your help to find out!

The goal is simple but ambitious: to photograph and identify every species which calls our park home in 2022. It will be the largest, longest-running species inventory Haw River State Park has ever completed and we seek to answer three questions: Does our park host the same species now as have been recorded in the past? Where do we have invasive species that we need to eradicate? What sensitive or rare species may need additional protection in the future?

To participate:
Teens and adults: Download the iNaturalist or Seek App, then take photos of the species you see at the Iron Ore Belt Access or The Summit Environmental Education and Conference Center Access. Take pictures from multiple angles if possible and make notes of observations like sight/smell/sound/touch (NOT taste!) that can help with ID. If you cannot confidently identify your photo down to species with the in-app suggestions, that’s okay; try your best and the iNaturalist community will help you. Note that your observations must be set to “public.”

Kindergarten-8th grade: Follow the same photo suggestions as above, but with your parent’s permission, submit your photo observations through the EcoExplore website at https://www.ecoexplore.net/. Your observations inside the park will still be added to park’s BioBlitz Page automatically. Park staff will also offer hikes throughout the year to help children work on additional EcoExplore badges and prizes they can earn while participating in the Haw River State Park BioBlitz.

Please note that this is a "Leave No Trace" inventory... In line with North Carolina law for all State Parks, do not pick or collect any plants, animals, or parts thereof. Take only photos, leave only footprints, and we'll be doing our best for our nature! Prizes will be awarded to the citizen scientists with the greatest number of different species observations and for any “new discoveries” to park records. Check out our project page on iNaturalist (https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/haw-river-state-park-bioblitz-2022) and Follow us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/HawRiverStatePark/ for prize updates. Here's to new discoveries in 2022!
