Saturday, November 2, 2019 from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm outside the Visitor Center for a fun interactive event all about fire. FREE! Learn how we use fire to help our forests be healthy, how fire can be used to make the park more safe, and how fire can actually help make habitat better for wildlife. Debunk some common misperceptions about fire! Our partners the North Carolina Forest Service, Danbury Volunteer Fire Department, Wildlife Resources Commission, Stokes County Fire Marshal, Southern Fire Exchange and lots of other land managers will be here to share what they do and how they use fire as a tool. Learn about how you can use fire to improve your own property. Kids of all ages will enjoy games, nature exhibits, etc. Talk to the environmental educator about what turtles do during a fire, take a selfie with Smokey Bear, try out some fire gear, touch-a-truck, ask us about jobs in the great outdoors, warm up around our bonfire, listen to live music, and buy lunch from SLIDER KING food truck. At 2:00 p.m. staff will be lighting a small prescribed fire for a demonstration so you can witness how we do it and watch how the forest transforms after fire. FREE SMORES

Sunday, November 3, 2019 – 2:00-4:30pm - Hanging Rock State Park Visitors Center, 1790 Hanging Rock Park Road, Danbury, NC 27016. The Stokes County Historical Society proudly presents “North Carolina’s WWII Experience”, an original documentary film by UNC-TV to honor North Carolina’s “Greatest Generation”.  This documentary, using archival film footage, photographs and personal interviews, serves to remind us of the service, sacrifices and heroism of these brave men and women from all walks of life in NC.  According to UNC-TV: “By the end of 1942, NC had more service members within its borders than any other state.”
This film screening is made possible with the generous permission of UNC-TV.  Please join us for this free, public event at lovely Hanging Rock State Park and enjoy the fall colors of the Sauratown Mountains in the heart of Stokes County!  Our thanks to UNC-TV and Hanging Rock State Park!
