Events and Programs

Hanging Rock State Park offers a variety of learning opportunities for all ages. Typically led by park rangers, these interpretive programs allow the public to gain perspective into what makes North Carolina state parks naturally wonderful. ​

Most of the events are free, though some require pre-registration. All give park visitors deeper insight into the natural world. Call the park office for more information.


Spring into Action! Join an Environmental Educator at the Lake Bathhouse to hike a variety of trails to total 5k (3.1 miles), stopping briefly along the way for "nature spotlights." We will enjoy the Nature Trail, the Lake Trail, the Upper Cascades Trail, and scenic pathways in between. The entire 5k Hike is rated easy.

Did you know that there are three species of owls found in the park? Come learn some interesting facts about these nocturnal hunters, debunk some myths and see some mounted examples of each species. A Ranger will be at the Visitor Center between 2-3pm to answer questions.

Cast your line and learn to identify our friends with fins! During this activity, we will participate in a Fish Food Frenzy relay!  Join a Park Ranger for a fun game where you will practice your casting skills and learn about the food that Hanging Rock fish species eat!

Join an Environmental Educator on an easy hike around the lake (1 mile) as we use all our senses to observe the signs of Spring.   We will stop along the way for “nature spotlights” – bugs, buds, blooms, and more!

Join a Ranger and learn about those who rule the sky - RAPTORS!  Learn about birds of prey, basic species identification and discover the world of international hawk watching.  Your learning experience will include visual aids and a power point.

Park Hours:

December, January, February: 7am - 7pm
March, April: 7am - 9pm
May, June, July, August, September: 7am - 10pm
October: 7am - 9pm
November: 7am - 8pm

Camping and cabin guests must arrive prior to the closing hour, after which the park gate is closed for the night.

The park is closed Christmas Day.
