Ferry
 

Beginning on September 25, 2020, the ferry will be running on a limited basis through October 25, 2020. The ferry will be running on Fridays to Sundays only.

Morning departures from the mainland are for day-use passengers only, and afternoon departures are for campers only.

Masks are required at all times while on the ferry. The ferry will have a limit of 20 passengers per trip.

Hammocks Beach Updates as of 9/23/2020

LIMITED FERRY SERVICE to Bear Island opening September 25, 2020 with COVID Restrictions.  Operating Friday, Saturday, and Sunday through October 25, 2020.  Captain, crew, and all passengers must wear face coverings.  Vessels will be restricted to a maximum of 20 passengers and cleaned after each trip to/from Bear Island.  Hand sanitizer will be available with “no touch” application.  Visitor center, trails, restrooms, boat ramp, and Bear Island bathhouse with potable water are open daily.  Masks must be worn in buildings and social distancing should be practiced. Bear Island is open for day use and Bear Island campsites are open for campers with transportation to Bear Island. Ferry service is available on a limited basis for campers please see the ferry schedule for additional information.  See the Reservations page to make a reservation.  Group campsite A is open for organized groups. Group campers will be assigned ferry departure/pick-up times when reservation is confirmed if using ferry service.  Otherwise, campers must have transportation to Bear Island; by canoe, kayak, or private boat. Visitor center hours:  8am – 5pm, closed for lunch 12pm – 1pm (except for ferry service days), gate hours 8am – 6pm. Please see www.ncparks.gov/open for additional information.

Hammocks Beach State Park Facilities Status

The mainland area and hiking trails are open. Visitor Center is open from 8am – 5pm, closed 12-1pm for lunch, gate hours: 8am-6pm.  Masks are required to enter buildings and social distancing should be practiced.  Mainland restrooms are open and can be accessed through the visitor center or outdoor entrances.  Bear, Huggins, Dudley’s, and Jones Islands are open for day use and accessible by canoe, kayak, or private boat only.

Bear Island Bathhouse Restrooms Open with Potable Water

Restrooms are available for campers and day visitors, along with drinking water at the Bear Island Bathhouse daily.  The bathhouse will be closed and winterized with no restrooms, showers, or potable water beginning November 16, 2020.  

No lifeguards on duty Swim at your own risk and use extreme caution as rip currents and strong currents can occur at any time.

Bear Island Concession Stand Closed.  Please bring any drinks and snacks with you when visiting Bear Island.    

Kayak Launch is Open for Use

The kayak launch is open for use along with all the paddle trails.  The five paddle trails are all remarked and open for adventure.  Huggins Island loop trail: 6 miles round trip (difficult), Bear Inlet trail: 5.6 miles one way (difficult), Bear Island trail: 2.7 miles one way (moderate), Queen's Creek trail: 0.7 miles one way (easy), Trout Channel spur: 0.4 miles, one way (moderate). Boat Ramp is Open

The boat ramp in the maintenance area is open for use, please go to visitor center to obtain a pass and pay fee.  There are five (5) parking spaces allocated for trailer parking and a permit must be obtained and a boat ramp fee paid ($7) to use the boat ramp.  Please note the ramp is closed from 9:00 – 10:00am and 3:00 – 4:00 pm during ferry service days.  **Park vessels and emergency vessels will have priority use. 

Camping 

Bear Island Beachfront campsites 1-11 and Boat-In Only campsites 12-14 are available for reservation. 

With a very active hurricane season, beach erosion has eroded about 2 feet of beachfront and during some high tide periods, access to the beachfront campsites may be limited. Reservations can be made 11 months in advance on-line and through the call center Please see the Reservations page for additional information and to make a reservation. 

Please note there is limited ferry service to/from Bear Island, on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through October 25, 2020.  Campers will be assigned a ferry time upon check-in.  Please see the complete COVID-19 ferry schedule for additional information. Campers who wish to access camping will need to secure transportation to Bear Island by canoe, kayak, or private boat.

No open fires are not permitted anywhere on Bear Island and use a red lens when walking the beach front at night.

Beachfront campsites 1-11 open year-round accessed by seasonal ferry service (when operational), canoe, kayak, private boat.    

Boat-in Only Sound Side Campsites open year-round accessed by canoe, kayak, private boat ONLY.  There is no access to the bathhouse from these campsites.

Bear Island Group Site A is open for reservation.  Group sites B and C are CLOSED due to storm damage from Hurricane Isaias.  Please see camping page for additional group camp information
