Bear Island Current Information

Park closed and evacuated by 12 pm on Tues, Sept. 11

Due to impacts from Hurricane Florence, Hammocks Beach State Park will be closed and evacuated by 12 pm on Tuesday, September 11. Based on Florence’s current track, ferry service and camping will be unsafe. Once the storm has passed, park staff plan to tour the park to assess when park can reopen, and ferry service and camping can safely be resumed. This message will be updated periodically as additional information becomes available.  Please contact the park at 910.326.4881 or hammocks.beach@ncparks.gov with questions or for more information.

Bear Island Ferry and Camping Closed September 12 - 19, 2018.

Due to impacts from Hurricane Florence ferry service to Bear Island will be suspended, and all camping will be closed beginning the night of Wednesday, September 12 through Wednesday, September 19, 2018.  Additionally, the bathhouse will be closed for the duration of the storm.  Based on Florence’s current track ferry service and camping will be unsafe.  

September Ferry Schedule Wednesday – Sunday
The September ferry schedule is Wednesday through Sunday hourly beginning at 9:30 with the last ferry departing Bear Island at 5:00 pm.  Please see the ferry schedule  at left for the complete schedule. Ferry tickets typically sell out early in the day on weekends.  Arrive early in the day to purchase tickets.

Indoor showers on Bear Island will be open to campers from 6 p.m. to 9 a.m. each day, and drinking water, outdoor showers and restroom facilities are open daily through mid-November.  The bathhouse will be winterized with no running water after November 15, 2018

Pets are not permitted on the ferry, also note that carts and wagons are not permitted on the ferry unless collapsible.  The ferry captain reserves the right to refuse or request wagons and carts are emptied until passengers get off the ferry.

No lifeguards will be on duty for the remainder of the 2018 ferry season.  
Swim at your own risk and use extreme caution as rip currents and strong currents can occur at any time. Additionally, the concession stand is closed for the rest of the 2018 ferry season.  Please bring any soft drinks and snacks with you to the island.  

ADA accessibility to Bear Island is currently unavailable.
Due to required dock repairs scheduled after the close of the 2018 ferry season.  Partial temporary repairs were completed in the spring of 2017 to ensure the safety of passengers however, until permanent repairs are completed there will not be ADA accessibility.  We apologize for any inconvenience and expect normal ferry service operations and ADA accessibility in 2019.
 
Bear Island Emergency Phone System Out of Service
The emergency phone system on Bear Island is currently out of service.  In the event of an emergency after hours please use your cell phone as cellular service from most carriers is available.  Electrical outlets are available at the bathhouse to charge a cell phone.
