Upcoming Changes to Camping Policy, Reservations, and Fees

Camping is allowed with a permit at 13 backpack camping sites along the trail system, including the Hi-Balsam Shelter. Currently, the Daniel Boone Campsite (group site for 7 - 12 campers) is reservable in advance, with a fee, and all other sites are available without a fee on a first come, first served basis. Starting June 1, 2019, all 13 campsites will be reservable in advance for a fee by calling 1.877.722.6772 or going to www.reserveamerica.com. The reservation and fee will be mandatory for all 13 campsites along the Grandfather Mountain State Park trail system. When all sites go live on the reservation system, walk-ins will not be permitted: all campers must have a reservation.

All 13 individual campsites in the state park are located along the trail system and are hike-in backcountry, primitive sites; there is no car-camping. There are no facilities. The terrain is rugged and can be challenging. Trailheads are near 3,800' in elevation and Calloway Peak reaches 5,946'.  Camping is permitted in the designated sites only, which are identified by signs at the campsites and with a camping icon on the trail map.
At this time, the Nuwati and Cragway trails are closed due to storm damage and all campsites on Nuwati are closed until repairs are completed.
At this time, and until further notice, the foot bridge connecting hikers to the trails from the Boone Fork Parking lot is closed due to storm damage. All Daniel Boone Scout Trail hikers (and campers) must use the Boulder Field Parking area, between mile markers 302 and 303 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Parking here adds 2.8 miles to the hike (one way), for a total of 4.2 miles from Boulder Field to Daniel Boone Campsite. Hikers can also access the trails via the Asutsi Trail, adding 0.4 mile to their hike. Asutsi Trailhead is located on Highway 221; GPS coordinates 36.11639, -81.777320.  Camping permits are required, even with a reservation. Due to current trail closures, all campers must complete a permit at the Profile Trailhead, regardless of the campsite or trailhead used to begin their hike.
Call 1-877-722-6762 or visit the reservations website to make reservations.
