“Don’t get lost!” An introduction to using a Map and Compass

Come join a Ranger to learn the basics of topographic maps, using a compass, and implementing tools and skills while hiking. We will begin in the classroom at the visitor center. Bring an orienteering compass with a baseplate if you have one, a few compass’s will be available for participants to borrow. Weather dependent we will spend time hiking, wear sturdy shoes, bring water, and appropriate clothing. A backpack is recommended to reserve the use of hands for using a compass. The classroom portion will be held at the visitor center classroom and will last about an hour. Those who are ready for an adventure will test their skills with a Ranger and venture to see some rarely seen parts of the Park!
NOTE: The field portion will consist of hiking about 3.5 miles total and will be on mostly uneven surfaces, some steep climbs, and a large section where no trail exists. Everyone should consider brining the hiking 10 essentials, a small snack or lunch, and enough water to drink before, during, and after the hike.
