There's something for everyone

From fishing lessons to astronomy programs, from tree identification hikes to kite workshops, our parks offer a variety of learning opportunities for all ages. Most of the events are free, though some require pre-registration.

As spring approaches, some of our slithery friends can be found basking in the sun.  Take this opportunity to learn about our native snakes.  We will cover venomous vs non-venomous snakes and some basic identification techniques.  We will be using live snakes throughout parts of the program.  Please meet in the visitor center.

How dangerous are black bears?  Can we coexist?  Why are black bears so unique?  What should I do if I see a black bear?  The program will begin at 2:00 pm in the Visitor Center.

Join a Park Ranger for a short, informative hike from the Visitor Center to the Lake Bath House.  We'll discuss the history of the Civilian Conservation Corps in the park and see first-hand impacts of their important work.  Pictures and artifacts will be on-hand as well.  Approximate length of program is 45 minutes.  In case of inclement weather, program will be held in the Visitor Center... more

It is the “Year of the Fish” for NC Parks.  Join an Environmental Educator to examine the digestive model of a fish and to learn how their amazing body features help them thrive in the water world.  You will be invited to maneuver handcrafted puppet fish to escape being eaten!

Get Hooked! Join a volunteer angler at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm for an introductory class on fly fishing.  Please bring all personal equipment available.  Classes may vary based on interest and skill level of the participants.   North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission fishing regulations still  apply.

Join a ranger for a short hike and learn about North Carolina's state reptile, the eastern box turtle.  We will participate in several activities along the lake trail before performing a scientific search for turtles in the park.  Wear sturdy shoes and bring water to drink if needed.  Approximate length of program is one hour.

Join a park ranger to learn about the NC Parks Junior Ranger program and what it takes to earn a Weymouth Woods Jr. Ranger patch and certificate. We'll go over the activity booklet and we'll even do one of the activities together so you can get one step closer to becoming a North Carolina Junior Park Ranger! (Most appropriate for children ages 6-12)
