Rock climbing and bouldering are currently only allowed at the Rumbling Bald Climbing Access on the south face of Rumbling Bald Mountain. Climbers may park in the designated parking area located at 827 Boys Camp Road. Should this parking lot become full, as it often does during the busy winter months, climbers are asked to park at the Welcome Center in Lake Lure (2932 Memorial Hwy (US Hwy. 64/74A)) and walk or carpool over to the climbing access. Parking along the roads or on private property is strongly discouraged.
Completion of the elevator repair project was affected by the October 23 landslide, so the elevator will be out of service until further notice. The attraction area was evacuated on November 11 due to the Party Rock Fire that has burned over 7,000 acres in the Hickory Nut Gorge area. Thanks to the incredible support of firefighters from across the state and country, the area was protected, no one was injured and no structures were lost.
As of 9:00 am on Tuesday, November 15, the Party Rock Fire is 3,744 acres in size and remains at 15 percent containment. The weather has not been conducive for large fire growth the past couple days, but those conditions will change later this week. The passage of a strong cold front this Saturday will bring little to no moisture to the fire. The approaching front will bring strong gusty winds from the southwest starting on Thursday. This wind event has the potential to push the fire to the north and northeast toward Weed Patch Mountain and the Gray Rock community.
