More Parking Slated for Rumbling Bald

In 2016, the Connect NC bond package was approved by voters, and an ambitious slate of improvement projects for NC State Parks began to move forward. Chimney Rock State Park assigned the Rumbling Bald Climbing Area’s parking lot as its top priority, and park staff have been excited to review the plans and envision the upcoming improvements.

Job Opening for Park Technician

Chimney Rock State Park is looking for a seasonal Park Technician to assist our maintenance mechanics and park rangers in over 6,800 acres of beautiful mountain terrain.

Duties will include mowing, cleaning facilities and grounds, assisting staff in daily park operations, treating invasive plant and insect species, and assisting staff in general maintenance and repair of buildings, equipment and machinery.

The position is temporary, 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm with some evenings and weekends.

Rogue Ranger Volunteer Work Day @ Rumbling Bald Climbing Access

Volunteers were split into four crews to work on various tasks, such as installing railings to preserve switchbacks, clearing trails of debris, raking gravel back onto designated trails, building structured rock staircases near the rock-face, and removing various trees and limbs affected during the forest fire. Some volunteers even brought their own tools, and the Friends group received generous donations and recruited new members. This event for 2017’s first volunteer work day was a great success for the local community and volunteers in support of Chimney Rock State Park!

Friends Hike to Survey Party Rock Fire Damage

On January 14, the quarterly Friends of Chimney Rock State Park’s Four Seasons Hike took place on the Rumbling Bald Trail, and over 70 people attended. The trail had burned during the 7,142-acre Party Rock Fire in November, so many came with questions about what a forest looks like after a wildfire.

Parking for Rock Climbing Access Limited

Rock climbing and bouldering are currently only allowed at the Rumbling Bald Climbing Access on the south face of Rumbling Bald Mountain. Climbers may park in the designated parking area located at 827 Boys Camp Road. Should this parking lot become full, as it often does during the busy winter months, climbers are asked to park at the Welcome Center in Lake Lure (2932 Memorial Hwy (US Hwy. 64/74A)) and walk or carpool over to the climbing access. Parking along the roads or on private property is strongly discouraged.
