Elevator Out of Service Until Further Notice

Completion of the elevator repair project was affected by the October 23 landslide, so the elevator will be out of service until further notice. These issues are being addressed by engineers and other specialists so that service can be safely restored to the public. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Please note that visitors can still access the top of Chimney Rock by climbing the staircases of the Outcroppings Trail. This 0.2-mile trail leads hikers through a rugged boulder field with dramatic views of Lake Lure, Hickory Nut Gorge, and Chimney Rock itself.

Chimney Rock Attraction Preparing to Reopen This Friday

Chimney Rock at Chimney Rock State Park will reopen to visitors on Friday, November 25, at 8:30 am just in time for folks to walk off their Thanksgiving Day dinner.

The attraction area was evacuated on November 11 due to the Party Rock Fire that has burned over 7,000 acres in the Hickory Nut Gorge area. Thanks to the incredible support of firefighters from across the state and country, the area was protected, no one was injured and no structures were lost.

Party Rock Fire News Release for 11-15-16 9:00 a.m.

As of 9:00 am on Tuesday, November 15, the Party Rock Fire is 3,744 acres in size and remains at 15 percent containment. The weather has not been conducive for large fire growth the past couple days, but those conditions will change later this week. The passage of a strong cold front this Saturday will bring little to no moisture to the fire. The approaching front will bring strong gusty winds from the southwest starting on Thursday. This wind event has the potential to push the fire to the north and northeast toward Weed Patch Mountain and the Gray Rock community.

To Ease Traffic Congestion, Chimney Rock Attraction to Remain Closed Until Further Notice

The Incident Command Team from NC Forest Service made the request to help ease traffic congestion while firefighters continue to fight the growing fire in Lake Lure. Air quality in the Park is also a concern for guests and associates.

North Carolina State Park System Celebrates 100th Anniversary

North Carolina’s state park system welcomes more than 17.3 million visitors each year to enjoy more than 230,000 acres. Its centennial celebration this year provides an opportunity to recognize the visionary leaders who set the wheels in motion.

It all started with Elisha Mitchell, a professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, who set out to prove that Mount Mitchell was the highest peak in the eastern United States. Using barometric pressure calculations, he determined it as the highest peak at 6,684 feet—and the U.S. Geologic Survey agreed with him in 1882.
