Ready To Open New Skyline Trail

Chimney Rock State Park Skyline Trail
Chimney Rock has had access to the top of Hickory Nut Falls since the early 1900's via the Skyline Trail. This trail leads across the upper cliff face of Chimney Rock Mountain from Exclamation Point to the upper cascades on Hickory Nut Falls. Over the years, this trail has seen many changes which included building over 2,800 feet of boardwalk. As time pressed on, this boardwalk became too much to maintain, and in 2008 the Division of Parks and Recreation decided to close the Skyline Trail after a fatality of a child. Since that time, the park has explored new options to regain access to the top of Hickory Nut Falls.

In 2015 we decided to build a new 1.1 mile trail that would not require any structures or boardwalks. This trail would follow the grade of the mountain and provide a safe sustainable access to the upper cascades of Hickory Nut Falls.

The new Skyline trail travels along a higher route on the mountain, which provides for sustainable natural resource protection and excellent views of Hickory Nut Gorge. (See two of these views pictured) It crosses Peregrine's Point Overlook where park visitors can have a picnic and enjoy a view of Exclamation Point and Lake Lure. It then continues to the upper cascades of Hickory Nut Falls and a view down Hickory Nut Gorge.

I was so pleased to see the community come together to help support re-opening the new Skyline Trail. The Park Advisory Committee, The Friends of Chimney Rock State Park, and Chimney Rock Management, LLC met with me numerous times to brainstorm ideas for this new trail. The Friends of Chimney Rock State Park raised funds through special events and donated $2,000 toward building the trail. The state also approved additional funds to build this trail. Now that the Skyline Trail is complete, Chimney Rock Management, LLC is chipping in by building a picnic area and putting the final touches on the trail.

I am excited that the North Carolina State Parks system continues to expand access to Chimney Rock Mountain and all of Hickory Nut Gorge. With this success and continued support form our community, I hope that we can re-open some of the other loved and sought after trails in the park. Take a hike on the new Skyline Trail and see what you have been missing.
