Chimney Rock Attraction Fully Reopens After Landslide

Wednesday, November 29, 2017 - 10:21am

Chimney Rock at Chimney Rock State Park has fully reopened after being closed for over a month following a landslide on October 23. During the closure, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) engineers and State Park contractors assessed how they could proceed to make the area stable enough to keep everyone safe. After a couple of weeks and careful consideration NCDOT and contractors came up with a temporary solution. Before the temporary fix could be placed, however, the rubble and debris had to be cleaned up first.

The debris from the parking lot and retaining wall stretched from where the collapse began to the road below (see previous post for picture). Clearing away the debris and rubble was not a quick or easy task since the embankment was so steep. To begin, a contractor in an excavator started from the bottom of the embankment and pulled down what debris he could. Next the excavator dug out the remaining debris from the top of the parking lot near where it had collapsed. After all the loose debris was cleared it was loaded onto dump trucks and taken to the bus parking lot where it will be temporarily stored until it can be properly disposed of. From the time the crew started clearing away the mess to the time they were done took about a week.

During the cleanup, the park partially reopened Friday, November 10. This meant that visitors could only access the lower trails, which included the Great Woodland Adventure Trail, the Four Seasons Trail, and part of the Hickory Nut Falls Trail. During the partial reopening NCDOT and the contractors completed the temporary solution for the top parking lot by setting up Jersey walls to keep people safely away from the fallen area. On November 22 the park fully reopened just in time for the holiday weekend. Visitors can now hike the lower trails as well as have full access to the Outcroppings Trail (which includes Chimney Rock), Exclamation Point, and the Skyline Trail. So, come enjoy the cooler air, beautiful views, and the gift of nature as winter and the holidays begin to arrive at Chimney Rock State Park!
