Events and Programs

Carolina Beach State Park offers a variety of learning opportunities for all ages. Typically led by park rangers, these interpretive programs allow the public to gain perspective into what makes North Carolina state parks naturally wonderful.

Most of the events are free, though some require pre-registration. All give park visitors deeper insight into the natural world. Call the park office for more information.

 

CATCH is an interdisciplinary conservation education program focusing on aquatic environments through fish studies, outdoor ethics, water safety and fishing skills. The workshop, teacher guide and student materials were all developed by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission. The CATCH materials are designed to be used with youth ages 8-15 years. The workshop teaches educators how to organize and conduct a CATCH fishing clinic. After completing a CATCH workshop, educators are given free access to all the educational materials. CATCH can be used as a Component I of the N.C. Environmental Education Certification Program.  Workshop is free of charge and will meet at the Visitor Center at 9am and be finished by 4pm. There will be a hour lunch break. You are welcome to bring your lunch and eat in our picnic area or venture out into the town of Carolina Beach and explore the local restaurants. Project Learning Tree (PLT) is an interdisciplinary environmental education curriculum designed for educators of ANY background. PLT uses the forest as a window into natural and built environments and helps people gain awareness and knowledge about the world around them. The 96 preK-8 activities are correlated to the NC Standard Course of Study in the areas of language arts, math, science and social studies. Secondary modules for grades 8-12 include an introductory handbook and handbooks which explore various environmental issues. PLT is a requirement in Component I of the EE certification program. This workshop is free of charge and will meet at the Visitor Center at 9am and be finished by 4pm. There will be a hour lunch break. The NC Wildlife Resources Commission and Carolina Beach State Park will offer a Herpetology Workshop on North Carolina's native reptiles and amphibians. Through hands-on fieldwork and classroom presentations, participants will learn basic biology, habitat requirements and human interactions with salamanders, frogs, snakes, turtles and lizards. There is no charge for this workshop, and it is open to the general public ages 16 and up.  EE certification: Criteria II - outdoor experiences.  Workshop is free of charge and will meet at the Visitor Center at 9am and be finished by 4pm. There will be a hour lunch break. You are welcome to bring your lunch and eat in our picnic area or venture out into the town of Carolina Beach and explore the local restaurants. This Workshop is open to anyone 16 years old and older and will introduce participants to the basics of bird watching. Learn how to identify birds by looking for field marks, behavior characteristics, shapes and sizes, songs and habitats. Also, participants will learn how to use field guides and binoculars. EE certification: Criteria II - outdoor experiences. Workshop is free of charge and will meet at the Visitor Center at 9am and be finished by 3pm. This workshop has a time constraint and lunch break will be short so please bring a bag lunch. The workshop will start at the visitor center but will be outside most of the day. Flying WILD professional development workshops are designed with urban/suburban educators in mind. Each training session provides formal and nonformal teachers of K-12 students with a comprehensive overview of Flying WILD: An Educator's Guide to Celebrating Birds, as well as practical hands-on training in its implementation. Workshop facilitators also share information about migratory birds and their conservation needs and help participants become networked into the bird conservation community in their community Each participating educator receives a complimentary copy of Flying WILD: An Educator's Guide to Celebrating Birds and a certificate indicating 6-hours of professional development training upon completion of the workshop. Adult Workshop. This workshop is approved for NCEE Criteria I credit. Workshop is free of charge and will meet at the Visitor Center at 9am and be finished by 4pm. There will be a hour lunch break. You are welcome to bring your lunch and eat in our picnic area or venture out into the town of Carolina Beach and explore the local restaurants. Pre-registration required.
