Flooding at Kerr Lake SRA from recent rain
Posted on:  Wednesday, October 7, 2015 - 4:56pm

The John H. Kerr Reservoir level has risen to approximately 304.8’ msl due too heavy rainfall that occurred in the Roanoke River Basin over the previous two weeks.  The reservoir level forecast as of October 7th is for the reservoir to begin falling slowly by October 8th and recede to 301.5’ msl by October 14th.

While the reservoir elevation did not go as high as originally predicted, several campsites at Hibernia, J.C. Cooper and Kimball Point are closed to the flooding.  The sites that are flooded, have been made unavailable in the reservation system.  Campers with reservations for flooded sites have been contacted.

Hourly lake level information posted by the US Army Corps of Engineers can be found at
The park office is open 8:00 am – 5:00 pm seven-days-a-week and the phone number is (252) 438-7791.

Kerr Lake State Recreation Area

Kerr Lake State Recreation Area is a collective of eight access areas scattered around the shoreline of this 50,000-acre reservoir that reaches into Virginia. Hundreds of campsites among five of the access areas offer a range of outdoor experience from RV hookups to group camps. There are several swim beaches in the recreation area and multiple boating ramps, some offering 24-hour access with a few reserved for campers. Two private marinas serve boaters and the lake is renowned for excellent fishing. An extensive boat ramp facility at the Nutbush Access is suitable for fishing tournaments. A community building is a popular venue for family or community gatherings.
