Events and Programs

Jordan Lake State Recreation Area offers a variety of learning opportunities for all ages. Typically led by park rangers, these interpretive programs allow the public to gain perspective into what makes North Carolina state parks naturally wonderful. ​

Most of the events are free, though some require pre-registration. All give park visitors deeper insight into the natural world. Call the park office for more information.

 

Catch a Sure Thing (C.A.S.T.) – We provide the bait, tackle, and expertise. You are encouraged to bring your own equipment. You provide a child between the ages of 6 and 12 who wants to go fishing.  This program is limited to groups of 6 to 8 children.  They will learn how to bait a hook, types of fish found in the lake, and if willing how to unhook a fish! (Hands on Activity ●Group size ≤ 8 ●Ages – 6-12 ● Length – 2 hours) Please call the park office at 919 362-0586 ext. 213 to register your child. Please leave the child's name and a parent or guardian's name and contact number. Spaces are limited.

Ever wanted to learn how to fish or freshen up old skills? If so, this program is for you.  Families will be introduced to fishing, aquatic education and water safety.  Activities will include knot tying, casting, fishing, cleaning and cooking fish, as well as information on fish management, aquatic stewardship, boating and water safety, and fishing regulations. Spanish speaking families are encouraged to participate.  All activities will be bilingual. There will be a limited supply of fishing poles to use and if you have one, bring it! The program is completely free and no reservations are required.  Food Trucks will be on hand or bring a picnic lunch to enjoy.  Sponsoring agencies: NC Wildlife Resources Commission, NC State Parks, US Fish and Wildlife Service and many more! Event will be held rain or shine.

Take an informal tour of the constellations with MPSC educators: telescopic views of beautiful objects, including planets, nebulae, star clusters and, of course, the Moon when available.  Location: Ebenezer Beach, gates will remain open till the end of the activity.   Please check the weather on day of event if cloudy the event will be cancelled. Monthly sky watching sessions are free and open to the public!  Check the "News" listing at the home page of www.moreheadplanetarium.org or call Guest Relations at (919) 962-1236 on the day of the sky watching session to be sure weather conditions will permit us to host this outdoor activity. Closed Christmas Day

Jordan Lake's day use area gates and campground gate open and lock promptly at posted times. No entry or exit is permitted before or after posted gate hours except for law enforcement or medical emergencies.

Closed on November 26, November 27, December 23, December 24 and January 1.
