Park is Open! Fall Color Is Here!
Posted on:  Saturday, October 3, 2015 - 9:12am

We remain open despite the hurricane.  Look for updates throughout the storm.  Fall color is now visible in the park.  This is a result of our high elevation - 5520 ft.  Snake Mountain in full view of the park entrance is at peak.  Elk Knob is next and will likely peak this weekend.

Elk Knob State Park

Elk Knob State Park features one of the highest peaks in North Carolina’s high country at 5,520 feet and one of the parks system’s finest trails to the spectacular views from the summit. Other trails are being developed at this relatively new park. Despite its location in an area known for winter weather, the park attempts to stay open throughout the winter and is the only one in the system offering cross-country skiing (although skiers must provide their own equipment). At lower elevations, there are primitive, backcountry campsites for individuals and for groups. Elk Knob is an outstanding park for experiencing all seasons in the mountain environment.
