There was significant snow melt Thursday.  The park received an additional two inches of snow Friday.  Extremely high winds have cause large drifts so snow amounts on the ground range from none at all to 1.5 feet.  Temperatures are below 10 degrees not including the significant wind chill from continuing strong winds.  Four wheel drive,  and snow traction devices for hiking are strongly recommended.

Elk Knob State Park

Elk Knob State Park features one of the highest peaks in North Carolina’s high country at 5,520 feet and one of the parks system’s finest trails to the spectacular views from the summit. Other trails are being developed at this relatively new park. Despite its location in an area known for winter weather, the park attempts to stay open throughout the winter and is the only one in the system offering cross-country skiing (although skiers must provide their own equipment). At lower elevations, there are primitive, backcountry campsites for individuals and for groups. Elk Knob is an outstanding park for experiencing all seasons in the mountain environment.
