Come Out of Your Shell in 2011

Painted Turtle

2011 is the Year of the Turtle in North Carolina's state parks. This year's catch phrase 'Come Out of Your Shell' was selected by our facebook fans.

Park visitors can expect special educational programs on these lovable reptiles. Coincidentally, the North Carolina Aquariums and the Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation (PARC) and have also declared 2011 as the Year of the Turtle (www.parcplace.org). Once again, we have original bandanas with illustrations of eight species of turtles - designed from photos by North Carolina state park rangers. For just $3, visitors can purchase the collectible bandanas to frame on the wall, clean their camping cookware, or put around their dog's collar.

Did you know that while we're inside trying to stay warm by the fire, box turtles are burrowed up to two feet underground trying survive the cold winter nights? Did you know that North Carolina beaches had three different kinds of nesting sea turtles last summer: loggerhead, leatherback and green? Did you know that North Carolina is home to 21 different kinds of turtles? Join us in 2011 to learn more, as we 'shellebrate' these lovable reptiles.
