Respondent Comments

The mail questionnaire concluded with the following open-ended question, "Please use the following space for any comments you may have about trails and greenways in North Carolina or about this study." The following is a transcription of all the comments received and is presented in random order:

We have been happy with all of the family outings we have taken in our local (Piedmont & Western NC area) parks. Would like to see more camping areas that have some facilities.

The state of N.C. needs more trails.

North Carolina is a lucky state (ocean to mountains).

I am 70 years old. Do not walk as much as I should. Use the city park near my home - have a river home also - walk in the woods with our dogs - I do think runners should have a safe, comfortable place to walk or run.

I’m sorry I was such little help. The only trail I’ve ever used was going up to Grandfather Mt. and over to the Blowing Rock and that was at least 10 years ago. However there are a lot young people in Boone, N.C. and Banner Elk, N.C. I’m sure would like to see more dirt trails.

This state spends enough of my tax dollars on things we don’t need.

Sorry not much help. Trails are not a part of my life but it is great for Boy Scouts and 4-H Clubs to teach the kids. We as far as I know don’t have any close to my home. The kids have to travel.

I am not really a outside person who walks a lot. I’m not really sure if there are trails around in Moore Co. I’m sure there are if you consider Weymouth Woods and Resevoir Park Trails.

While working at State Park, I discovered trails I never knew about, as did people who visited us. I think more public awareness would go a long way in getting the most out of trails that currently exist.

I don’t use them often, but like to know they are available when I do want to get back to nature.

I am a relatively new resident of North Carolina, and am very impressed with the overall quality of the state parks here. I would like to see more small parks and greenway linkages.

Find something a little more important to waste tax money on! Such as, finding a way to keep people safer in Fayetteville. Thank you so much.

Would be willing to pay for support of designated mountain biking trails of a very technical nature.

I would like a trail closer to my home instead of walking around my block for safety reasons. A trail closer to home would be easier to use and I could save time driving and use that time for walking.

We need trails in Wayne County.

I am a former marine, and special forces retiree. I appreciate the outdoors. I’ve enjoyed trails in the Uwharrie and Pisgah National forests. But some medical problems have slowed me down and at 65 I’m in poor shape. Hope my filling this out helps you.

I really do not have a knowledge of trails other than Concord, Raleigh, and Boone.

I wish there were more trails. Too many people have to walk on sidewalks or tracks. I think the trails should be landscaped or somehow be more interesting as you walk. I like Crowders Mtn and Chimney Rock.

I was raised on Cape Hatteras Island. I enjoyed the National Park trails there. I have not used National Park trails of any kind since I moved away from that area.

The main reason I don’t go more often is that it (trails) (unsurfaced) are so far away, or they are close but crowded.

A waste of tax money.

Why all the interest in trails?! What about fishing, and camping which has taken a terrible decline/lack of interest in the last 5 yrs. Ask Charlie Taylor from Brevard!!

Personally - not much interest in trails. I do feel trails should be placed in scenic areas.

I am not familiar with trails in N.C. or anywhere else, therefore I can’t give you much of an opinion.

Although it would be ideal to have a trail within 15 minutes of every American, I do not feel that goal is realistic.

For the past ten months I have been unable to use trails due to physical limitation. Before I became physically impaired I used trails in N.C. extensively.

My husband and I were engaged on Calloway’s Peak on Grandfather Mtn. We had hiked the Daniel Boone Scout Trail the day before and camped there, then hiked to the peak at sunrise and he proposed. I think that shows how special trails are in our lives! We love the Tanawa Trail. We hope never to lose these trails!

I am too old nowadays and don’t use the trails anymore - thanks.

I don’t feel well qualified to be part of the study, as I have not used trails recently. I am a widow, struggling to meet my bills, and I cannot pay anything for trails in N.C.

I do a lot of horse back riding in VA. I would like to have or know a good trail in or around Mt Airy, N.C. Let the horse back riders maintain it.

As I explained to the person calling I’m not a trail user but they wanted me to fill this out anyway. I’m sorry if it isn’t what you wanted.

We are most fortunate to have the Blue Ridge Parkway in N.C.

Would like to see more motorized trails.

This is not what I thought I would be taking part in. We are interested in our State Parks where one can camp. S.C. and Tenn. have wonderful State Parks for camping.

NC should develop these resources for NC and visitors. Hopefully more and more will want to enjoy mature and not destroy it. It has to be done though and still develop the state a hard task. Thank you for the opportunity to participate.

I feel that money for development and maintaining trails should come from taxes and sales of food, drink and other items needed on the trail. I enjoy the trails at Hanging Rock and Pilot Mt. State Parks and also trails along Blue Ridge Parkway. They are within 30 minute drive of my home.

I hope that trails in N.C. will improve.

I enjoy using the trails and greenways with our scout troop and as a family. I don’t use them as much as I would like.

Feel trails are necessary for beauty, fittness, relaxation, etc. I’m not the one who really enjoys walking a lot, but do support them for those who do walk and use outdoors for camping etc.

We are sixty three and our children are gone now.

Does Lincoln Cty have any? Why no? Parks - nice ones - where are they?

The trails are great except for the large amount of ants.

We love going to the mountains to sight see and use trails.

We do not need to spend any more money on trail.

I think on the surfaced greenway trails there should be more of a display of flowers and more benches where people can sit and enjoy the breeze of the trees or the smell of the sweet flowers or to watch the squirrels scamper and hear the birds sing.

None

The unsurfaced trail in my survey is the Appalachian Trail in the Cheoah Bald area of N.C. The surfaced trail is a logging road that is parallel to the Appalachian Trail.

Policing and safety of trails would determine success of any trails provided; if you build it and people can’t feel safe they won’t go!

I feel "trails" are better if they are in natural settings not manmade ones!

I have had the good fortune of being reared and continue to live in an area that gives me the privilege of wood trails, lakes and roads to enjoy.

The trails in NC are great.

Need more single track bicycle trails. Horse trails should be bicycle accessable.

Abandoned rail grades in the mountains and piedmont should be utilized before the right-a-ways are lost.

I live in the mountains and I visit the Fort Fisher area. I think we must maintain these trails for the foot traffic and vehicles also.

I would like to see developers of new areas designating areas for trails &/or greenways in their areas.

I pay a national forest land use permit fee along with my hunting and fishing privileges. The trail user gets this same opportunity without cost. The horseback riders do also, yet most all the trails in my area have been closed to ATV and 4 wheel drive vehicles.

Hiking trails is a nice "day away" for me and my family. If there were trails within 15 minutes, some of the enjoyment would disappear. Part of the enjoyment is change of scenery. After all, we can walk our neighborhoods for daily walks.

If a tax amount was used for trails I would not object but as far as paying out of my pocket, No! The government needs to get a grip and stop putting money out for tourist and start using it for the people of N.C. Let us enjoy our state first!

It would probably be best to seek info from a person interested in outdoors and trails.

Not only are more "multi-use" trails needed, but education should be a high priority. Education of land managers in charge of trails (maintenance and design) education of boaters. More open trails reduce user conflict and resource damage. NC and USFS should work together to provide trails. Access for all users - on gamelands - parks - USFS etc. An OHV registration program should be developed (other states are doing it) mandatory certification for users under 18.

There seem to be plenty of trails around for those able to use them. I could use more information about guided hikes since I do not know the area well.

Please look at the German system of trails. They have trails probably within 15 minutes of everyone and they are well constructed, which means less maintenance. I recommend that you contact the German government to get information and study their excellent system. The home of Volksmarch. That’s probably where they get a lot of funds from.

I’m sorry I couldn’t help more. We moved to NC only recently and have had to deal with more important priorities.

Very poor, not safe, not convenient. I came from Atlanta where I had access to a 3 mile trail by the river. Between Powers Ferry Rd. and Columns Drive in Marietta, GA. Very nice and safe. Charlotte needs something like this. I am an avid walker, I try to walk 4 miles each day. But I don’t have a good place to walk so I walk my neighborhood.

Need more accessibilities for elderly and handicapped people.

Beautiful and informative trails do exist throughout the state. Less effort is made near rural/farming communities though.

4 wheel ATV trails needed for all age groups to help keep kids out of trouble.

We support trails in N.C. But we are not the type to use them.

Trails are needed more in North Carolina. The trail most used in our family are located in South Carolina, because they are closer and more well known.

I am getting too old to use them.

‘People’ found littering should be sentenced to a lifetime of trail maint. The taxes I already pay should cover development and maintenance of trails.

Existing trails need more and better location maps and educational guides. These should be readily available and cheap or free.

Better/more maintained trails at campgrounds.

Although I am an infrequent user of trails, I am glad that this study is occurring. I believe trails are worthwhile and necessary, but I don’t get to enjoy them as much as I’d like to b/c of time (lack of) and most importantly, horrible allergies.

I am handicap and can’t walk. Sorry I can not help about the trails.

We need to plan for development of greenways and trails in our metropolitan areas that can be used by cyclists for commuting and other point-to-point transportation. This would greatly increase/improve quality of life in urban/suburban areas.

I pay enough taxes already.

We should preserve all of the natural scenery possible. Wooded areas are disappearing rapidly.

I know there are more trails somewhere in my locale but do not know where to find information about them.

Due to surgery on my knee, I have walked trails very little in last 12 months. Actually, I have walked only the last month. There are trails in our neighborhood and they are the only ones I use.

Hiking trails with nice camp sites are an inexpensive activity for families that can be used most of the year. Thanks for the opportunity to voice my opinion.

Sorry - obviously I’m not an outdoor, woodsy type person.

Very good study. I am pleased with trails in North Carolina, but I would like to see more trails developed in better areas. Trails close to my home are right alongside major roads, which can make running less enjoyable. Parks (or very green areas) and rivers/lakes are perfect places for trails.

I would like to see more info sent to families and individuals because many people don’t have any way of knowing what is available and how to get there. (At least brochures and maps near the trails)

I am eighty five years old. I can’t use trails and I don’t know many people that use trails very much and think we have enough trails in our part of the state.

I think the trails in North Carolina are very important and educational. There should be more security and maintenance on the trails. There should be more information on what we could do to help in building and maintaining the trails.

I advocate a "no fee" for most trails. Many schools visit and it would make it more difficult if children had to pay to visit. My extended family has thoroughly enjoyed visiting designated trails several times a year.

Trails can be very useful and enjoyable if they were not breeding grounds for criminal activities; rape, robbery, muggings, etc.

All public lands, wetlands, and floodplanes would be good for trails. This would put them much closer to public. Tax concessions for land owners who provide and maintain trails for public use would increase trails and their use.

I have mixed emotions about trail development. I enjoy hiking and bicycling in natural settings yet I also enjoy privacy. I would not like trails near my property because of tresspassing and littering concerns.

As long as trails do not take property that is used for hunting I think its ok. I love to hunt and don’t like things that might hinder this.

Coming from Colorado I enjoy the outdoors greatly, glad to see NC is taking some action to preserve and advertise beautiful scenery.

I have no knowledge or interest in trails.

I would like you to know we just relocated to N.C. One of the reasons I agreed to the move was the fact I like to hike and raft the rivers. I knew N.C. was a great place to do these things. Lets keep the trails going.

I think North Carolina has some really promising environments for trails of all types but still has quite a ways to go on matching other areas of U.S. on most trail development.

We know very little about the trails in N.C. as we have never had time to do that sort of activity.

You guys are doing a great job.

I don’t go hiking as much as I would like to but when I do, I like the trails and they meet my approval. Thanks have a nice day.

Age 72. Disability prevents recreational walking.

I live near many unsurfaced trails and when I get time I enjoy using them.

My association with the outdoors is very limited due to health.

We are retired couple and husband is handicapped (very limited walking). I explained to person who contacted us by phone - thus answers are very non-commital.

I would use trails more often if I had someone to go with me.

I believe there should be suffient trails, but a trail within 15 minutes of every American I think is too many. I also believe use of these trails should be free.

Better lit, well maintained trails in urban and suburban areas may make people not so likely to rush to the state parks. I hate to share my mountain vacation with the rest of the country. I go there for peace and quiet. Otherwise I may as well go to Disney World.

I don’t see how you could charge people for using trails. How would you regulate trail use?

I cannot find any surfaced trails in WNC that allow skating. In other states I have lived there are wonderful parks that have greenways that allow skating.

The trails in my area are very badly used and abused. Not by the hikers but by the gays, bicycle riders, and joggers. They take over especially during hunting season, harassing everybody they can. They should be required to buy a license same as the hunters. Thank you.

I feel I pay enough taxes now to provide this service.

We would like to have one in the Wilkesboro.

I am originally from Ohio and since moving to North Carolina, I have been impressed with the parks and trails and close access to them. Thank you for such well maintained public parks and recreation areas.

Make trails safe, wide, and clean.

I believe money could be better spent on something else. People who live in rural areas are not going to be as supportive of trails and greenways as those who live at or near truly urban areas.

I love North Carolina. I do not want to see more trails or better marked trails. It grieves me to see trails "improved" with wooden walkways and hand rails. I further dislike government regulation of wild areas - beyond designating areas "hands-off" to developers and lumber companies.

To keep bicycling off the highway.

My family frequently used trails in parks for recreation when I was a child. I have very fond memories of these times. It is extremely important to me that we keep and maintain dirt and surfaced trails for our children.

This is great….I don’t even know about water trails but I will find out. There needs to be more info. Send it to people, have it on the radio, make it known otherwise people will stay inside with the T.V.

The trails in Greensboro are very nice and well maintained. They seem to feel safe too.

I have lived all my 38 years in North Carolina. I have never seen an appropriate level of intrest in this area from our elected officials.

I think we need more water sources to the public.

I would like to see more sculptured animals, and creatures, also more flowers and plant life.

They are most often beautiful and plentiful.

NC has a great trail system, unfortunately most of it is far away from the most heavily populated areas. I’d like some closer and I need more info on where they are.

I don’t know where a lot of trails are and maybe some places I go are considered trails after all.

Don’t mind paying if used wisely.

We do not use the trails. We are 79 and 82 years old.

I am from St. Pete, Florida. I have lived NC for 13 yrs. now. I am used to nice parks and in St. Petersburg they are plentiful. I am let down on the quantity and quality of parks here in NC. All children deserve the experiences of parks for bicycling, playgrounds, and sports.

There needs to be more places for the handicapped can get to, so thay can see the water fall and rivers and places that has been their for years.

1) Develop a method to have careless users pay for the trashing. 2) Ask for language and signs suitable for youngsters. 3) Motorized Pers. Conveyances should be pathed separate from walkers and joggers. Allow safe child play spaces. Bikers should not force walkers from paths! No pet poo! where others need to walk or sit.

Trails need to be patroled by police regularly. Many wooded trails are beautiful, but safety is a big issue. Many more people would use them if they felt safe.

The only place that is near enough for me is Medoc Mountain State Park. It is very good.

I hope "off highway vehicle" trails are not a priority! I don’t think most of those people would stay on a trail and besides that they’re too loud - pity the people who would live close by!

Thanks for putting the work into this. I just wanted to say that after living in Chicago for most of my life, I’ve been very impressed w/the trails and accessability to nature here in NC. Keep up the good work.

Even though I live in a rural area of NC, I feel that trails or areas that allow use of motorized (ATV, motorcycles) is almost non-existent. I would like to see this issue addressed, as do many other people I know. We do consider ourselves responsible and considerate users of off road vehicles!

Please continue to acquire more trail land. But before developing new trails please repair and refurbish the old ones to satisfactory standards.

I think it is extremely important for ordinary people on limited income to have someplace to go for recreation. I think all of us whatever our income need to "get back to nature" whenever we can as a way to reduce stress. As we become more populated the need will be greater and space available could become a problem. Planning ahead is needed.

If for horseback riding and in my area I would give $25 a year. If not, none.

I’m not willing to pay more taxes for trails - If you can cut some of the unnecessary spending that the government does and spend it on trails for the residents of the state, that would be ideal.

I love the mountains and the area - I don’t have enough time to do all the hiking, walking, fishing, (my husband) that I would like. Litter is the biggest problem, in my estimation. There is nothing like nature.

Enjoyed Linville Falls trail very much. Would love to find more trails along Blue Ridge Mtns.

We have a home in the city and a cabin in the mountains - most of our hiking is done in the mountains. We do walk for health every day in the city.

Mecklenburg County could develop many more Greenway trails to link the entire region’s park network.

Keep up the good work!

Would like more easy to moderate trails near waterways.

We pay enough in taxes already.

Our family really enjoys hiking. Unfortunately the trail closest to our home is poorly maintained, overcrowded and dangerous. The trails that we really enjoy using are far away - over 1 hour drive. Not practical for a short hike, wastes too much gas/takes too much time to and from.

We use the Uwharrie trails the most. I would like better maps of it. The Birkhead trails are also close to us, but we cannot find any way to access it. The only access we know of are hiking only - no horses. If there is a horse access and a map, I would like to receive that information.

N.C. has some beautiful trails but I feel they should be kept as natural as possible.

Hiking in the mountains I find many trails are not clearly marked. I waste time trying to locate the correct direction. Horses cause problems on the trail for hikers with damage to trail and their waste. Also, bathrooms are needed in many areas.

Taxes should cover the expense.

I think power line right of way, and gas pipe right of ways should be used for greenways gravel or paved.

I believe the level of importance, for increasing the number of trails in NC, should be set by the public. If the people want more trails, and are willing to pay for more trails, then the state should work toward developing more trails.

When you have to walk daily, it is much more peaceful and beneficial when you are able to enjoy the beauty of nature in this great state.

I enjoy walking and taking my preschool class on nature walks. Unfortunately these activities are curtailed due to fear of crime, reports of sexual meetings in the park near my school, etc. I do notice park employees are in the area more. Still, I do not feel I can walk alone.

There very nice.

Telephone Questionnaire

North Carolina Trail & Greenway Survey 1998

(TELEPHONE INTERVIEW FORM 5/29/98 DRAFT)

Introduction

Hello, this is __________ and I’m calling from N. C. State University.

- We are conducting a survey about trails and trail use in North Carolina with the North Carolina Division of State Parks and the North Carolina Trails Committee. The results will help planners better meet the needs of trail users throughout the state.

- Your participation in this survey is voluntary and confidential and will take only a few minutes. Each person surveyed will represent many other North Carolinians who were not surveyed, so your help is extremely important.

continue

- There are many types of trails in North Carolina and people participate in many different activities on them. Trails range from narrow paths, to paved bicycle trails and greenways, to off-highway vehicle trails. For the purposes of this study, please consider only trails in North Carolina that are marked and maintained for recreational use and are open to the public even if a fee is charged. They can be trails that are surfaced in some material like bark chips, gravel, cement or asphalt, (this includes "greenway" trails) or they can be unsurfaced such as traditional "backcountry" trails -- paths which have a natural dirt surface. [do not read: sidewalks are not considered trails.] - When we simply use the word "trail" we are referring to both surfaced and unsurfaced trails together.

Thank you very much for your time. We have a few more important questions about trails and greenways in North

Carolina. May we mail you a short follow-up questionnaire for you to complete at your convenience?

If "No". It will only take about 10 minutes to complete and would be very helpful to the state trails program as

they plan what trails if any should be developed in North Carolina in the future.

If "Yes". Confirm name and address.

THANK YOU for your help with this study!

1998 NORTH CAROLINA

STATEWIDE TRAIL AND GREENWAY SURVEY

Thank you again for participating in this important survey. Your opinions are important to us.

There are many types of trails in North Carolina and people participate in many different activities on them. Trails range from narrow paths, to paved bicycle trails and greenways, to off-highway vehicle trails. For the purposes of this study, please consider only trails in North Carolina that are marked and maintained for recreational use and are open to the public, even if a fee is charged. Some of the questions break trails into the following two categories:

Unsurfaced Trails These are natural paths of various kinds such as traditional "backcountry" trails, paths, most of the Appalachian Trail and trails in many State Parks. They are generally narrow, unimproved, and have a natural dirt surface.

Surfaced Trails These are trails that have been surfaced in some material like bark chips, gravel, cement or asphalt. They are generally wider and more heavily used than unsurfaced trails and include "greenway" trails in or near cities and towns. Sidewalks are not considered trails.

When only the word "trail" is used, we are referring to both of these types together.

If you have questions or comments about this survey, please contact Darrell McBane, State Trails Coordinator at (919) 846-9991.
