April 7-23, 2017

The NC Science Festival is a 2-week long celebration of the educational, cultural, and financial impact of science in North Carolina. Our goal is to connect with folks from all walks of life - Fostering a sense of community through exciting events that are fun, educational, and inspiring for future generations.

Learn about Kelvin the Spokesbot, who is the offical mascot of the NC Science Festival.

Join us for several opportunities to participate in special programming for this year's Festival!  

 

Join the park ranger to discuss and discover the natural wonders of our salt water ecosystem. We will get a chance to collect specimens for identification. Bring water shoes if you are planning on participating in the collection activities.

Lake James will be working in conjunction with the NC Museum of Natural Science to celebrate our natural world! Periodically throughout this week, Lake James will have various educational programs in addition to citizen science opportunities. Keep an eye on the calenadar for more specific programs and we look forward to seeing you during the NC Science Festival!

Join a ranger and library staff to learn about various wildlife found in the Wayne county area. Participants will craft their own bird feeders to take home.

Join a park ranger for an exciting hike through the woods. You will get an opportunity to explore the park’s new property, discovering sights and sounds while taking in the fresh air. You never know what types of wildlife you may get a glimpse at. Bring binoculars if you have them.

Come join us on April 8, 2017 for an evening of astronomy! We will have the Tar River Astronomy Club to guide us through our exploration of the night sky. This event is free for all! Dress for the weather. Please call the park office to sign up for this wonderful experience. (252)797-4475.

Come out to the park to learn the ins and outs of what makes each tree species unique. You will get a chance to see some neat tricks to identify a tree...just by looking at the wood. Grab a magnifying glass and see for yourself! A pine is not just a pine and an oak is not just an oak. A great chance to build up your detective skills for your next trip out into the forest.

It's a bird! It's a plane! No, it's... Join a park ranger to explore the area in search for some of the aerial visitors passing by during the spring migratory season. You might get a chance to see some of birds that normally live north and are just passing through... a very rare sight to experience! Of course you will get the chance to welcome back birds that use the park as their summer home. OPTIONAL: bring a bird guide and/or binoculars if you have them.

Join us in celebrating the North Carolina Science Festival by joining a park ranger in a citizen science project to identify, count, and record as many species as we can find! All species of animals you can think of will be our focus. Park Ranger Kevin Bischof will lead us to discover what park rangers do to inventory park species. This program will be for all ages but will be specifically geared towards kids and ideal for homeschool groups. Meet the ranger at the Holly Discovery Trail parking lot in the Paddy’s Creek Area of the park. The program starts at 1 p.m. so don’t be late!

Come out to Hammocks Beach State Park and experience the thrill and excitement of a STARLAB portable planetarium at the park!  Sponsored by WoodmenLife– you will get a chance to encounter the universe and learn about the solar system and all the exciting myths and mysteries behind our dark skies.  There will be out-of-this world games and crafts to enjoy.  If the skies are clear telescopes will be set up for a closer look to the night sky.  The program is free and for all ages to enjoy.

Come and celebrate the NC Science Festival with us and learn how you can create art from things found in nature! We will go on a short hike to learn about the different plants that are found here and then we will create a bandana using what we find.
